Starting up a character, what classes are in short supply?

I've played all classes except beastlord to at least 50, and I don't really have a strong preference as to what I play this time around.

In your experience, what classes are the most needed? I may as well start with the aim of filling a gap :p

At higher levels, lots of people are looking for rogues right now. But at mid levels (30-50), I can tell you that I had a hell of a time finding a tank for a group. I was grouping constantly with my rogue, and I'd estimate that my group had a bona fide plate tank only about 10-20% of that time. There was a Sludgebreath adept raid (max engage lvl 42 I believe) that got called off because they couldn't find ONE plate tank in that range during primetime. I think most people either get bored of them, or just twink them like mad and get power levelled up to high levels.

I recall mained clerics being a rarity as well. For god sakes don't start another monk/shaman combo please.

I still think SK's are really under played. But they're not that useful for raids... (non-specific SK tanking mobs I mean, like Abom).

In the 4-5 months I have been playing ... I have only seen and grouped with ONE bard! I'm not sure how much they are desired, but that seems under played to me. Come to think of it, my sister-in-law's toon Aliasha is the only Paladin (level 20ish) that I have ever seen/grouped with ...

*shrug* :?

Magician, Shaman, Monk, Druid all seem to be overplayed!

You can never have enough DPS or CC IMHO -- Rogue, Wiz, Enchanter

For some reason I'm seeing quite a few more rogues nowadays, but still virtually no bards. Classes that are WAY overplayed are shamans, druids, beastlords, rangers, and to a lesser extent maybe magicians. Warriors are quite rare as well.

When I do a /who all class, rangers seem to have a low number compared to most...bards were the lowest I think.

Change you filter and do a /who all class 35 65 and see how many of those chars people have put more then just soe passing time into it changes the numbers a good bit.

Yer you could be right (will check in a bit). Was never enough people of any class to 'bottom' out the search, but nah, I didnt pay that much attention to the lvls, mainly because I dont care too much, if everyone played a ranger I still would, I play ranger mains in all rpg type games that I play.

Thanks for all the replies. I've made a shadow knight, a shaman, and a rogue. We'll see which one makes it past level 10 :)

SK's are kind of like Necromancers on raids. They serve a couple important functions and add DPS. Ive been one of the only ones left after a whipe (FD owns you) several times and helped to get the raid back up and going. Pulling occasionally as well (even though monks can do it better).
