Starting Ranger | Seeking Advice

Hi friends.

While this account is showing only one post, I've actually been apart of SoD's community for years. I've been here off and on since the server was taken offline through a legal dispute 7 or 8 (?) years ago. However, most of my EQ 'meta' knowledge has faded and I'd like to start on the right foot.

The Wiki mentioned that DEX only affects melee combat. Is this true? I want my ranger to focus on bow damage.

Do Rangers attain pets eventually, or am I confusing this ability with the Druid?

Rangers get bird pets that do small damage but proc a debuff on the mob that it is attacking that increases either bow damage or bow accuracy.

The pet is either at 60 or 65 then they have a runic pet which would be a 65 pet

in terms of dex i think it just helps you hit the target as much as it does melee (which i could be wrong). It definitely doesnt have that inherit bonus that a "live": ranger use to have.
 
Rangers get 4 pets over the game. The 1st is the lesser rangfinder at lvl 30 or so. Then a normal, and greater at 45 and 63ish. Then finally a runic 2 pet. The pet is just to add to dps, is does almost nothing on its own. Not sure bout the math behind stats.

funny, I was just wondering this yesterday and tried to find the answer to no avail. hopefully a dev can chime in, since i imagine this would be very difficult to accurately test.
 
30, 50, and 63 are the 3 buyable pets. And according to the spell parser they actually increase bow damage AND accuracy. They can also function as a decent rampage tank in the absence of anything better.

As far as dex goes, I obviously don't have any numbers but from what I've heard the AA's like Unerring Precision and Crippling Strike only affect melee and not archery, so it wouldn't surprise me at all if dex did nothing either
