Staff Emeritus
Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of the men of old; seek what they sought. ~Matsuo Basho
Hatreds are the cinders of affection. ~Walter Raleigh

It's that time again, the time when the Shards of Dalaya team has bitten off a bit more than it can comfortably chew, and thus must seek out new blood to fill the ranks.

What are you looking for?
We are seeking new content developers and coders. We will be recruiting these positions separately, but if you have interest in a little bit of both than let that be known.

For coders we are primarily looking for people with experience in C++ and/or PHP, for tinkering with the server code base, and our webtools. We will not automatically drop you from consideration if you have experience in other, related languages (Java or other OO languages, Ruby or other web languages). Formal training and experience is a plus, but far from necessary. You must accept that the code bases, both sever and web, are a thing of Lovecraftian horror, and that you will need to become its master in some manner.

For content developers we are looking for creative individuals who can describe themselves as self motivated, committed, and open to learning new things. If you have a very tight schedule, don't work well without constant supervision, and get frustrated easily, this is not a position you want. You'll be expected to interact with the player base, and they are registered carnivores.

In a perfect world, we'd be looking for two developers and two coders.

I'm interested, what do I need to do?
You'll need a few things, one an IRC client is 100% mandatory. All important discussion occurs in IRC channels. Take time to learn how to use one before you apply.

Next you'll need to write up an application. Unlike other times, applications will be PMed to Cyzaine, rather than an email. You are free to link to wherever from there. Make sure to mention which position you want in the subject line.

Finally, you'll need to be committed. You have to be ready to see this through to the end. Nothing irks us more than putting time into you, and have you abandon us. We don't tolerate that, and you don't get a second chance for unannounced absences.

How do I apply? What do you need from me?
Content developers and coders will have slightly different requirements. But both will need the following.

  • Full name
  • Main char on SoD and how long you've been playing
  • Amount of time available, on a weekly basis
  • Why you would like to join us, and what you'd like to do with us ideally
  • Any additional notes
Content Developers will also need the following

  • Any fictional writing experience you may have
  • A full description of your dream zone. Include lore, mobs, loot, anything you can think of. Feel free to reuse current zones.
Coders can expect a fairly indepth interview with myself and Xardon. Content developers may also be asked for a small interview. These will be conducted in IRC.

Any parting notes?
:dance:CONTENT DEVELOPERS DO NOT NEED ANY CODING EXPERIENCE TO BE PART OF THE TEAM.

We will teach you EVERYTHING you need to know. But you have to be willing to learn.

Coders, you DO need to know how to code. We won't be teaching you that. SQL experience is a big plus for Server Code candidates, and pretty much mandatory for Web Code candidates.

:whoa::whoa::whoa::whoa:THE DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS IS MAY 30th:whoa::whoa::whoa::whoa:

Alot of you think you have very good ideas about the game, and what direction it should go. Now is the time to prove it, once and for all. I leave you with these parting words from other staffers.

"It's neat!" ~Dev-Zae
"Don't wimp out and quite after 3 days" ~Dev-Slaar
"Cyzaine will hurt your feelings, avoid at all costs" ~Dev-Marza

"What the hell. You were supposed to make me look good!" ~Admin-Woldo
"<Cyzaine>man on man this is exciting" ~Dev-Tyronia

hey just a note from me, slaariel!!! if you are the type who just wants to run around the world putting in quests for level 2 rangers or whatever guess what we need that guy... so if you have ever said to your friends irl 'you know what would be a neat low level enchanter quest???' YOU may be right for this job!!!!

How often does this happen a drive for content creators?
I m one of the people who would like to create those low level druid quests... hehe

Of course I have only been playing for a few days and not sure I am familiar enough with the world and how the foundational mechanics are working.

Just curious if you look for content people often or not?

thanks!!

Public calls for any staff position are rare. For GMs, they are nonexistant. You just get a random unexpected tell out of the blue asking if you're interested and able to put in the time.
