Some questions for rangers

Hi all,

WR looks great and I can't wait to play but I'm having a little trouble choosing a class. On live I played a level 65, 100+ AA Ranger and I am considering the ranger class here as well. Before I decide I would like some more information about WR rangers. I've done some searching but I'm still not clear on how rangers stand compared to live rangers. If any of you can help with some of these questions i'd appreciate it.

1) How common are rangers in WR compared to other classes?

2) How does ranger dps (both melee and bow) compare to other dps classes?

3) How desireable do you feel rangers are in groups and raids?

Archery questions:

A. How does archery damage compare vs melee damage WITHOUT AA's?
B. How does it compare with all archery AA's?
C. It sounds like archery may still be being tweaked. Whats archery's intended role for rangers? (IE full time use, lvl 1-60+ on raids/group/solo or simply kiting/occasional use like 2 mins of trueshot)
D. Whats the itemization like for bows?
E. on live, archery dps drops quite a bit on raids due to LOS problems and lag(Because of the single fire attack key). Are those still issues on WR? Are you forced to generally melee on raids? Has it been adressed at all?

Last quetsion: Is there any other changes from live I should consider about rangers?

I really hope your all going to tell me that archery is much better than melee for rangers on WR. I love the idea of an archer/hunter type ranger but I loathe SOE's papertank/2nd rate melee "vision" of a ranger. Archery is VERY important to me for a ranger, so anything you can add there is great. I'd love to get all the data I can on that, parses, etc.

Thanks in advance to anyone who will take the time to answer some of these questions. I appreciate it. :D

PS: Whats with all the hate for BST's? I noticed a ton of negative comments on about that class while searching for info. It'd be a shame if they've been ruined because I think its a fun class.

I'm just gonna answer that the BST thing is an old rumor mill that's finally stopped now. BSTs are a good and valuable class.

Bsts are a very neccessary and wanted class on WR. There are not enough to go around actually. The old days of bsts not being worth 2 cents are gone. Paragon, dps, crack, substitute pink heart , group agro debuff and savagery are great additions to groups and raids.

P.S. Don't ever ask me to repeat this again.

Rangers with their AA's and a good bow (Frost King Hunting Bow) can do almost as much dps as a similarly powered rogue. And the best thing is they don't need to be healed every 15 seconds or die like dogs to raid mob ae's. Rangers crit easily for over 1k at high end. Melee dps is good until you put the time into raising your bow AA's then you'll never go back to melee except in extreme situations where there isn't enough room or something bizare like that.

Well, you have much more experience playing a ranger than I, but I'll try to offer some help, though I still have a lot to learn.

1.) Not very common. When I first started there was only one other Ranger on WR (Kionn). There are now a few more, yet Rangers are pretty rare even still.

2.) We fall somewhere in between on DPS, both melee and bow (pre-AA). Kiting is almost always necessary. We can tank but we are still paper tanks and get shredded a lot. However, with the surge of armor and weapons in game, you can be well equipped and this always helps. We can now bow crit pre-AA, which helps a lot. Post-AA Bow DPS becomes incredibly powerful. And, Rangers are offered some pretty useful combat styles for both melee and bow.

3.) Grouping is varied right now. With a lot of people DCing/2 boxing because of low pop, grouping is somewhat like whoever is available to group, well, groups. As for Raiding, while I have never raided, I believe most guilds would welcome a ranger or 2 into there guilds and use them on raids when they can/needed.

As for your archery questions I don't have the detailed information you may be looking for. I would suggest Kionn or another reply with that information.

The Tracking skill is invaluable, and with it you can go pretty much everywhere and selectively hunt mobs when xp starts to fall off. From level one I have always had a progressively better selection of mobs/zones to hunt. I have mostly soloed my way to lvl 34 with lots of downtime. Playing a Ranger is very demanding. WR tends to be tailored to grouping, which is why I like soloing so much, it is a real challenge.
