i was wondering if someone could explane the finer points of the root dot technique

i am playing a shamman and am about to get my root spell and was wondering how to get the best use out of the spells at my disposal...

thanks for the help

There's not a lot to it. After root run to maximum spell-casting range if possible. Cast dots in order from longest lasting to shortest lasting, your two or three highest dots should suffice. After the dots are on back off a little further so that when root comes off you can stand up and root him from max distance. Rinse, repeat.

I'm pretty sure you will have very little to no success root/dotting a red.

I would deffinatly stick to blue mobs.

now when using this technique should i stick to blue mobs or can i us it to kill yellow or the ocational red....

Practice. I know that sounds funny but I swear it's just like learning anything. Start with something you know is a high green and figure out exactly what spells to stack and learn to time them and root. I haven't played a shaman in over 3 years so I can't tell you much at all about their spells, especially in the case of WR.

It's going to be frustrating, just a warning. When leveling up I did that strategy and the problem I found was that your DoT initial damage breaks root. So make sure you have lots of hps when your doing this.

I used to do some stuff like: Root, DoT, DoT, kite with pet attacking it. Usually that was pretty nice since your pet takes no mana, and if your just rooting and doting your pet is doing nothing.

Does kiting a mob reduce the effectivness of dots in WR?
No, movement does not reduce DoT damage.

I've tested a variety of styles, from SoW-kiting to root-cooking to straight out nuke-a-palooza, and I've actually discovered that the best grinding method is to pull a blue with slow, drop a DoT on it, one nuke to knock it down to size and melee away. This gets doubly easier when you get your regen and haste spells. Most mana/health efficient way I've found so far, as of level 33.

On live, I used to Root-DoT yellow undeads with my 44 cleric. I don't know if you can do that here, though. I am fairly certain that a red will resist most things that you throw at it then come eat you for lunch, even if it is just one level into red. Unless you know for certain that a higher level mob has low enough resists that you can get away with a Root-DoT, then I'd stick with dark blues and whites.

maybe thats true about red mobs...

but I am able to root rot reds, with my druid.

Granted, I have to have full mana, and if i get more than 2 - 3 resists, I have to zone.. but I have done it. =)

not really worth it, in the end.
