So what does a 2nd server mean for the future of WR?

Hi all,

With all this talk about getting up the funds to get a 2nd box, it got me thinking about if/how the community will be affected if/when this does happen. I may be getting ahead of myself but I couldn't help thinking about the logistics of how things will run. Here's a list of things I was curious about:

Does the current EQEmu coding support a load balanced environment? Meaning can you have two servers running the same world? Or will this mean there will have to be a second world server that players will get to choose from?

If a 2nd box does mean a 2nd world, are there any other options as far as upgrading from the 2.4 GHz box to maybe a 3 or 3.2 Ghz dual Xeon. Or is this just like putting a bandaid on on a torn limb?

I checked out ev1servers and they only have up to dual. I also did a quick search and was able to find quad box hosting starting at *cough* $3099 with $5000 setup fee. I did however find a dual Xeon 3.0 at $349/mo plus an extra $25/mo for running Windows 2003, plus whatever other extras you need. Not to mention all the setup fees. The more I look at it, the more it makes sense for you to stick with ev1servers. Their prices seem a bit more reasonable.

Sorry for my rambling, but if nothing else, I'd like the community to see what kind of money it takes to host one big server in case there are any complaints about having to create characters on a new world server.

Now if there is load balancing for the same world available I've just wasted everyone's time and I'm sorry for that.

Whatever the end result is, the WR team is doing a great job!

I believe osme zones will be hosted on one server, while the other zones will be hosted on the other. Thats my understanding, anyway.

Well, I'm not an expert, but this is my guess.

Winters roar currently runs on 1 server, which hosts all the components necessary to run the server. The MySql database, the world.exe, and a whole bunch of zone.exe's for each zone. I'm guessing that the second box would be to transfer a lot of zone.exe's over to the second box, and the first box would run the world.exe and the mysql database, and probably some zone.exe.

I think it was said before that there weren't going to be any server splits.

Hope this helps.

It'll be, as said, one world, balanced between the servers. High traffic zones and SQL stuff will be on one, and the rest of the zones will be hosted on the other. (I believe. Wany/Wiz/Zipher/Kathgar can correct me on this.)

And to add to the discussion. Have you looked into servers with Opterons instead of Xeons? Every single benchmark I've seen favors Opterons over Xeons, the Opteron is simply more bang for the buck. (Assuming the bucks are the same, and I'd imagine it's similar.) Even just a 10% performance increase for no extra cash sounds like smart computing to me. (And the benchmarks at Anandtech.com
show it as 22% to 44% faster at MySQL tasks, granted thats on a 64bit Linux, not Windows, but the trend should be similar on any given platform.)

Anyhow, it's a thought. Maybe it's not worth it to make a server move, but the Opteron is simply superior at database functions.

*Shrug* Just a suggestion from an outsider's POV. Take it with a grain of salt, YMMV, et cetera.

--Edit-- Apparently I'm a thread killer. I really would be interested in knowing if this has ever been considered, or if the pricing was just significantly better for Xeons or what-have-you.
