Server Status Message

I've noticed that there's really not anywhere on the site that mentions whether a patch is going on or not except for IRC. My problem is that I'm pretty sure my school has the IRC ports blocked, and trying to circumvent that restriction isn't worth the risk of losing my internet privileges for the semester. I've also noticed that a lot of people that are unaware of IRC get confused and post in the support forum.

My suggestion or request would be to add a tiny message at the top of the Server Status page on the main page that describes the status more generally rather than for each specific zone. The message could be as simple as: UP, DOWN, PATCHING, etc. This would give people that can't access IRC/don't know what IRC is a chance to take a quick glance at what's going on when the server is down.

I'm no programmer but it doesn't seem like this would be a tremendous overhaul of anything, but it would provide a great benefit for a lot of people. If this isn't worth anyone's time or it's too much trouble to do then I can just deal with it, but I thought this might be a good suggestion.

Thanks!

I agree it would be very nice to have something on the main page or at least a forum post announcing server downtime. Perhaps even an estimate of how long it will take and what is being updated/fixed (mostly because I'm curious about the technical stuff going on).

I spent a good 15 minutes trying to figure out why I couldn't log in before I stumbled onto the server status page and noticed all the zones were down.

I agree with the above posts - IRC has a host of issues around it.

posts take a few minutes

http://www.shardsofdalaya.com/omni/index.php should say all zones down if a patch is going on, although yes it could be placed on the main page to be better utilized.

Yeah this is the status page I was referring to. I was suggesting maybe there could be another item at the top of this called Server Status that would give a one or two word description of why all the zones might be down. Being that I can't get on IRC to check to see if it's a patch or just a reboot, I have no way of knowing whether to assume it's a reboot and it'll be up again in 5 minutes or if it's crashed and it'll be down for 5 hours. I know they don't like giving ETA's, but something to let me make my own judgment call of whether or not I should bother trying to log in again in another 5 minutes would be great.

It should be easy to code a lil snippet of PHP that connects to IRC, grabs the channel topic of #sod and posts it to the front page or public omni site.

I'll look into it.

It's main page + 1 click. If there's not a bunch of green, something's happening. I agree, not being able to IRC would be a pain, but Omni is a reasonable substitute. And having it on the main page would slap on unnecessary bandwidth, not to mention create additional polling and resource allocation to do so. Yeah, it's a small thing, but mulitply that small thing a few hundred times (especially when there is an outage) and it adds up. Just click it from the main page, or if it's that important, make a shortchut to it directly.

Patches are announced in game by MOTD and global broadcasts. If you pay attention to the chatbox you will be able to see when they announce a patch time. They do make several broadcasts at 1 hour before, half hour before, 15 minutes then 5 minutes, usually. Sometimes its broadcast at 1 hour before then 5 minutes before. Either way, they do give ample warning before a patch so people can get to a safe camp spot and log out before the patch occurs.

I understand that it's only one click away on the main page, but if I am just getting home and see that, I don't know whether the servers will be back up in 5 minutes or 5 hours. I don't want to assume it wont be up for a while every time because it might just be a reboot.

I know this and if I'm in-game before the patch it's not at all a problem. I just thought this would help a lot of people that try to jump in and can't log in but also can't access IRC.

Awesome, thanks! This is all I was looking for and I think it would help out a lot with the "SERVER DOWN?!?!" posts.

Oh crap, didn't notice it was on the homepage:psyduck:. As for the server load issue, it isn't that hard to implement an AJAX solution using XMLHttp to get the server status on the home page with a click. That way you'd still click, but only if you want the status.

The right direction is humans that are not idiots, but that will never happen. God is our dev and his head is up his ass. Loot at Hitler. Case closed.
