Server Costs?

I am curious what the specs on the SoD server are and how much per month it takes to run (both electricity and ISP wise). Is the server in someone's house? What steps need to be taken to have a server all your own?
 
We run things differently around here than others. If you are really curious about setting up something on your own, I'd start at the EQEmu forums, and go from there. They sound like what you are looking for.
 
People ask that question about once every other month and never get a response. Go check out EQEMU forums and poke around there for some rough ideas. Dont think I have seen a response on that forum either but probally better to ask there.

You, you can run eqemu off your home pc, and "have your own server". Few will be able to or want to connect to it, but thats all you need.
 
I've been able to run EQEMU servers with 20 peeps or so lag free, after that my 10mbit connection gets abit gruff..

Ram, processor, and internet connection=KEY.

64bit OS or perhaps Linux, something where you can have massive amounts of resources, and you should be okay..
 
The biggest cost is bandwidth ... which for just zones its about 1GB per player per month. Tack on login and world and fomelo and you're probably talking up to 4GB per person per month.

So your cost calculation would be, server hardware cost + hosting cost + bandwidth costs = Total cost.
 
I am not asking particularly for the purposes of hosting a server, I am asking to get a ballpark number.

I am thinking of having my own little server someday, but not for the purpose of hosting an EQ server. I am a software engineer by trade and I have been toying with the idea of making a game, but when I get home from work I have been coding all day and don't want to code games, just play them.

If I made a server, it would be so I could create my own webspace, have a repository, and maybe host a game but it would far more likely be something I put together myself than an EQ server.

I'm sorry, I should have been more clear about that. I can easily see now how people would assume I wanted to try to host my own EQ server but that was not the goal!
 
For an average player base of 500 to support, plan on about $1200 - $2500 a month in costs/overhead.
 
Wow Xardon I've been playing for 3 years now on SOD. I had absolutly no idea the costs on a month to month basis was near that high. I think I'm going to look into becomming a donator in the near future. Not because I feel like I have to, but after 3 years I feel like I really want to. Expecially after being enlightened about server costs.
