There is a huge discrepancy between resist rates at higher and lower levels.
I've been toying around with some non-twinked characters in the last few weeks and this one fact really stuck in my mind. I'm referring to both having your spells resisted and resisting malignant spells.
On the low end of things, resist stats are so low that they're almost negligeable. With buffs and bard song I was able to get some of them up to 30 at around level 22. What did that actually mean for resists? I'm pretty sure that the few I did get were from dumb luck. I'm curious if a lowbie with 100+ to all resists would fair better. Would they need 200? 300? I know that at 65, playing a monk that can top out 500 in any stat that I still get the odd hit here and there (depending of course on the resist mod for the spell itself).
I made a bard and maxed out his charisma. That's right, no points into anything else. Untwinked, raw... My starting charisma as a wood elf was 110. That's pretty high for a level one char. I didn't get my first offensive spell until level 4, Chords of Dissonance. This is a great spell for the lowbie bard and for reasons I found out later. After levelling a bit more, gaining some more fun toys I started to notice a lot more resists. My current cha is 124 after gaining a few quested augs and some minor items. A bit low? Maybe but the untwinked can only afford so much. Regardless, on high blue/white mobs I was getting huge resist rates. At least 40%+ were bouncing off(and I feel I'm being very generous here).
Now, as a bard it affects me less than a pure caster. Bards use no mana. As well, most bard songs last for a few ticks so unless I'm twisting and/or tanking I usually don't have an issue holding down a couple dots. If I were an int caster, I'd probably be dismayed. That's a lot of mana lost and most noobs won't bother dumping points into cha (knowledge about charisma doesn't translate well from that other game to SoD). Some can easily start their career with only 60 cha! I was using double that and still getting crazy resists. If I'm tanking for whatever reason, I usually pulse Chords of Dissonance rather than my much improved later dots, the spell has a neg 100 resist mod and almost always lands as a result.
I know at one point wiz had talked about lowering resists across the board and this is a project I'd like to see revived if only to streamline the whole resist thing from the bottom up. Even at 65 with max cha (that includes max hidden str) I still got more resists than I'd like to see at raids. I did notice a huge difference when I started working my charisma up but am disappointed by the many resists I still get. Unfortunately, I do know that any overhaul of the resist system would require a lot of work, hopefully it's something that you'll still consider looking at.
