Rangers in SoD

I played a ranger for a bit on the live servers. I know this isn't the live servers but I was curious as to what rangers' roles are in groups across all levels. I know the ranger class is described as masters of archery, with warrior/druid skills. However, they always seemed like a rogue/druid combo. Are they different on SoD (as in HP table shared with pallys/SKs/warriors instead of rogues)? Also, do they do a lot of melee damage in this game? Seems like they should be either on par with warrior HP or on par with rogue for DPS in melee. I don't know how, or if, that could be balanced, but it seems like something that should be done.

Just my 2 cents.

Rangers are very nice as is. Rangers can outrange many ae's in the raid game while still putting out a lot of dps. They are excellent kiters, with the snare/sow lines of spells, as well as having specific spells that add a damage proc to their bows. In the high end, sometimes rangers can be excellent off tanks, with the ability to hold aggro well along with using styles to tank. Rangers role is ranged non-magic dps really, due to bow mastery.

There is no chance a ranger will have warrior like hp or rogue like dps, at least with similarly tiered toons

Coolness. I was mainly curious as I may have a friend join who is a HUGE ranger fan from live. I am asking for him and for my own personal knowledge. Thanks a ton for the input!

As far as the non-raid, group game, Rangers provide solid DPS. Not Rogue quality DPS, but they can take hits a little better, at least from what I've noticed. I often group with a rogue, no tank, where my Ranger keeps aggro and, um, tanks, while the Rogue's DPS goes up since he can backstab the entire time. That's a lot of melee DPS, and with a cleric healing, it works except for those mobs where you need a tank.

Not a tank, but can off-tank when necessary and root is helpful for crowd control. The higher level root lasts good long time. They keep aggro very well, especially with 2 lower delay weapons, their nuke spells, etc. Rangers are still good for pulling out of doors with the harmony line, though you have to practice that technique.

I cannot speak much to the archery, as my Ranger's bow isn't very strong (yet) and he hasn't achieved archery mastery AA yet. So, his best DPS at 65 is still melee. I imagine that'll change once all of the AA's kick in and he gets a better bow. Other than tmaps, the Ranger hasn't raided much, but that'll happen.
