Ranger vs. Bard vs. SK vs. Paladin vs. Necro as my Main?

Hey guys,

I am trying to decide which class to make my main. My prechoices are: Ranger, Bard, SK, Pal or a necromancer, but I am not really sure which is best for me.

I probably will also level a healer class to box with the main (I got a 36 shaman right now, but might make a dru or cleric) but I don't really wanna box all that often if I can avoid it - i just play so much better not boxing.

The most important thing for me is High-End Raiding (class must be useful and often needed for raids). Also important would be to be wanted by groups, and/or at least be able to solo good, even in the high levels if not sooo wanted by groups.

On live I played a Rogue in a raiding guild and tbh I hated not to be able to solo at all.

A few specific questions I have about the classes i mentioned:

Ranger DPS vs. other classes and Ranger Melee DPS vs. Ranger Archery DPS?
Is the use of arrows really so expensive?

Bard vs. Ranger Tanking capability?

Soloing ability of all the classes (although like I said I prolly will box a healer while leveling up alone)

Most fun to play from your guys experience?

--------

This thread is a bit chaotic I admit, but i hope you can help me with my decision.

Thanks

Bards are generally always in fairly high demand. A good bard can fulfill a ton of roles, and you're not getting a whole hell of alot done at the high end of raiding without them (melody of the shield + pot4 since like 90% of high end content has an ae). They also stack fairly well on raids, even to the point of having 3 of them, though it's generally preferred to have a more dps oriented class as an extra. However having pot4, mots, damage song and regen song all at the same time is awesome.

Bards can tank pretty well from what I've seen. I've seen them tank the following mobs without many problems.

IP trash (felyn, regasin, allie)
Old One-Eye (hits like a truck, ginam)
Silitithiarthara (or whatever the hell her name is, the spider queen in lasanth, Felyn, though also, aisling for a bit :D)
More examples exist, but you can basically tank a bunch.

So can rangers however. I've seen Brandar tank some fairly ridiculous shit in my time, such as gharantosh, and even ulaz from 40% on down on a near wipe.

Rangers aren't really in high demand from what I've seen. A ridiculously high number of people have pocket rangers stashed away somewhere. They can tank very well at the high end, and can also bowtank mobs with a large hitbox. The downside of a ranger is basically carpal tunnel and theres a ton of them. They don't particularly box extremely well from what I've seen (unless they're going straight up melee). If you do box one I'd think a high damage high delay bow would be better, though my experience with rangers is mostly limited to playing drello and shoo occasionally.

Sk's are in demand sometimes, other times notsomuch. Their basic problem with the high end is you only ever need one. Back in the 36 man days you could afford to have 2 of them on the roster, now space is very limited, and you'll never really need more than one. Warriors suffer similar problems. Paladin's suffer similarly, though there are generally less paladins about. They are also very desired in high end groups for their ae aggro, and are generally my favorite tanks to group with as a mage, as they are very complementary to my dps.

Necros are ridiculously good at soloing, stack reasonably well, and do a metric ton of dps on raids. However their dps is gradual, so they're not ideal for burn everything down in 20 seconds type ae groups.

ok i guess pally and sk are out of choice then for me, they werent my favorite choices anyway - just in regards of duoing they would be good i thought.

Hmmmmm difficult difficult decision. Bard, Necro and Ranger all seem appealing to me. Gonna have to make up my mind between these.

another question: i have a 36 monk and shaman im duoing with at the moment, but they arent too much fun tbh, so I wanna start the main and swith over to him. But problem is that I am quite broke and dont think I would be able to buy good gear for the main yet. Do you suggest to keep leveling the mnk/sham some more to get some plat together to twink the main and make the xping easier that way? And any suggestions where/how to raise some plat?

edit: by the way - how would a bard/necro, ranger/necro or bard/ranger team do? both in regards of duoing but also grouping (and even maybe in raiding environment)?

if youre gonna box you want 2 classes which complement each other well. ie they can support each other - sham/monk, pal/dru, sk/cler. or if you have friends that play with you, you can go wild and run 2 dps classes while he handles healign/tanking. as for gear, i recommend you get gear from drops u get in grps/tmaps. save your money till youre in the late 50s early 60s so u can get pre-raid gear if youre not in a raiding guild. sham/monk is a pretty useful grp combo as the uber buffage/slow and good pulling/dps abilities are always nice. i see that necro/bst combo works pretty well and druid/necro if youre into that

Another pretty sick combo: Pally/Necro.

You won't be able to do any of the REALLY insane shit but you have a rather decent overall combo because you have everything covered including tankage and heals. Just my 2cp (ok, I am biased).

no i actually i agree with you Luas, pally/necro is a good combo, especially if the pally has a decent enough mana pool to use heals such as remedy on those longish group/duo fights. awesome DPS, good tankage + pet/mez = ftw

I made a Bard now, and hes already at the level of my shaman. Had monk to go along with shaman but he is retired for now - first concentrating on the bard to be my main.

The combo might not be the best to duo (at least not the classic tanking with the bard and healing buffing//slowing etc with the shaman) but I like to group alot and it works quite well.

Plus I really like the bard class so far and she is my new main - and having a leveled up shaman never hurts I guess.

Or do you guys have a good tip for which class to go along with a bard best? Necro seems nice but duoing with them will be quite a struggle I guess (kiting i mean .. =) )

Bards are like semi gods... a good one anyway.
so if you make ti your main i think you can be pretty happy about it.
