Quick Question for a newbie

I looked around read the FAQ and etc.


I read how we need to check off all the expansions up to the Lost Dungeons, but do we actually need those expansions in order to play on SoD?
 
I Had only up to PoP but I checked off everything when patching to Live. Seemed to work fine here in SoD.
 
You could get away with just PoP and the classic zones, if you want to go bare minimum, but you'll be missing a lot of models (they'll show up as naked male humans). There'll also be some popular zones that you won't be able to zone into without updating further (first ruins, warrens, for example.)
 
LDoN contains Catacombs, the zones inbetween The Hole and Mistywoods... and a few other zones. I believe. So if you want them, you gotta patch it.
 
Is there anyway to get these without having to pay? I would love to play SoD but not if I have to buy the LDoN expansion and etc. :(
