So, I'm looking to upgrade my monitor soon but I'm thinking I'll have a problem.

I bought my PC from Dell and it came with 5.1 speakers and the center speaker is one of those that's attached to the base of my Dell monitor. The connector goes from that center speaker to my subwoofer, along with the other 4 surround speakers which hook into it separately.. then my subwoofer has a connector that goes to my PC's sound card which has the 5 colored ports on it.

So if you're with me so far, how am I supposed to get a new monitor and still use my current sound system? Since the main connector is on that center speaker on my old monitor, I can't use it if I get a new monitor. Am I going to have to buy an entirely new set of 5.1 speakers + subwoofer?

the other 4 speakers plug directly into the subwoofer or to the monitor? if they plug directly in the monitor you may be hosed. If they plug into your subwoofer there's a pretty decent chance you won't have to get new speakers, you can just set your system to 4.1 and only loose the speaker from the monitor.

oh ok

yeah my 4 outer speakers connect to the subwoofer. then my subwoofer has a connector that has 3 colored ends that plug into my sound card

what kind of connector is used between the center speaker on the monitor and the subwoofer? it's it's a standard RCA jack, you could use a standard center speaker and buy an RCA jack cable for it. one end would be RCA for the woofer, and the other end would be whatever it is that's plugged into the speaker, usually bare wire.

There's three channels then and you can skip one.

One channel is your front speakers, one is your rear speakers, and one is your center speaker.
