Question for a friend thinking of joining.

Recently told one of my WoW buddies that I was "going back to EQ". At first he rolled his eyes and laughed, asking me how I could go back to such a "simple game" after so long. His first and only MMO is WoW, but he does remember back in the day when I used to play EQ like a freak. Anyhow.

After chatting about it for a while, he decided to give it a go. He wanted to take a break from WoW anyhow (until the next expansion comes out) what could it hurt to pay $8 on Amazon for some discs for a F2P game?

I tried to explain some things to him about the nature of the game, but I don't consider EQlive knowledge to be sage here. He is moving into a new place and so doesn't have the internet at the moment, and is a lazy sob anyhow so I'm gonna ask the question for him.

Since he is conditioned to WoW, where just about every class is a hybrid in some way, and has 3 talent specs you can switch between to keep it fresh, he finds the idea of doing only one thing for 65 levels to be horrid. Like, I used to play a Wizard on live, and he couldn't understand the fun of nuke, nuke, sit.........stand nuke , repeat ad nauseum. So a class like a Wizard, or a Warrior, or a Rogue would be terrible for him.

That said, what classes do you guys think have the "busiest" most varied play at 65, in 6 mans, raids etc. That can do different things at times and avoid too much stagnation. I don't think he cares about topping the dps meters or anything like that, he just wants to be able to do different things.

I suggested Ranger at first since it seems like they can heal a pinch when needed, buff, nuke a little, melee dps , ranged dps, solo by kiting, tank a little, but I dunno how much that stays at 65.

I dunno, what are your thoughts?

I would say Bard, Enchanter or Necro. Necros are mostly dps but against undead targets they can nuke, charm, slow and do just about everything else. They can feign death, their mez is almost as good as enchanters, they can rez if they have rubies, they can solo very well for times you cannot get groups, top-end they are chart-toppers in dps... all of that said, there are a LOT of necros so expect to spend some time soloing.

Bards seem to be able to do everything as well.

Enchanters are either Gods or Gimps depending upon the zone and the group makeup. They can be the most important class in the group if well-played and in a zone/group where it matters... at some points in their career they may become the emp/jb bot though :(

necro or shaman. as a necro he gets a good pet, can fd and pull, can dot, can weaken mobs, can slow undeads, can mez, can tap... simply put a lot of variety available and he can play using a lot of different styles depending on his mood.

As a shaman levelling up he can heal, slow, weaken mobs, dot, dd, melee, cani, he also gets a pet that doesnt totally suck.. it is one of the more active classes that gives him a lot of options of things to do at all times.

Both are classes that can give a lot of variation and fun times.

A bard or shaman will be busy in both raid or group. A necro can be very busy in a group, but is going to be doing 96% dot rotation in a raid.

Bards and necs are dead easy, shaman require work to become amazing, but once there ... forever heals and dots. A really wonderful class for anyone who likes to see and feel the results of his/her efforts.

a big difference between SoD (EQ) and WoW is that EQ is a social game. Especially in SoD where groups are much much MUCH better than soloing.

To me when I last played WoW it was: Queue for heroic, laugh about how bad the rest of our dps is, finish heroic. In that process never say a word to my group.

In this: you join a group, talk to the people your grouped with while grinding / dungeon crawling.

Being that, the simpleness of some classes can be ok. But I like the suggestions so far of which classes have the most to do.

Bard / shaman are good suggestions. I think enchanters are a great class though. Slowing, Cripple, Vex, Curses (caster / melee), mezzing (sometimes), Giantkining. And of course the aforementioned buffs. I tell you what, thats more than I do on my ranger during a raid.

Chanters are fun and can solo certain places if you know how to charm well. However, unlike on live there is an exp penalty % if you kill your old charmed mob. Having a druid to snare is also helpfull as you can snare and fear while your hasted charm pet does alot of the work if not all of it.
