question about locked doors

i guess i'm wondering why they -have- to be locked at night? is it just a RP thing?

because if there isn't any other reason, i want to request that quest NPCs not be behind locked doors... (unless for rogue quest or something like that).

my friend and i wanted to start ring quest, and i had already gotten it... so he needed to run himself over to get it. when he got there it was night... so i came up with the brilliant plan to make a rogue and PL it to 5 to see if i could pick the lock... which, of course, didn't work.

it's been about three hours, and it's now 3:20 am... and i'm too tired to finish quest. i don't want to request something extreme like making the ingame time go faster or getting rid of locked doors altogether - but maybe making quest npc's accessable at night wouldn't be a bad thing?

i can already see the replies to this post, but i'm hitting submit anyway.

It's an rp thing, yes. I'll see if I can come up with a solution for it. Keep in mind that this isn't a promise that he'll be moved out of the gate house at night - there are lots of NPC's you could argue against being inside at night due to quests, so the streets could become pretty cluttered if we moved all of them out. :p

thank you for replying...

(i love how immediate the response is from GMs/designers to the playerbase)

And before you sink any more time into that rogue simply for the sake of picking that lock, you need a skill of about 180ish (or so I've been told.)

And don't even think about logging inside a building. You'll get closed inside and you'll be alone ;).

For that reason alone, locking the doors is just retarded. The game is despawning the NPCs anyway, keep the freaking doors unlocked so melee-types don't get trapped in there. That's happened to my bard 3 times now.

If it has happened to you 3 times, I don't think that the doors being locked is whats retarded.

When it comes to Sgt. Halesy, I have an idea. Disable Halsey's despawning at night and make the Mark of Newport act like a key for the door. Granted, this will keep people from starting the quest at night, but from a roleplaying perspective it could work.

It would be similar to having to show your ID at the door to get in since the sergeant doesn't want to be bothered at night (and when he's probably off duty) unless its important. If you don't have the Mark of Newport yet you can't get in, which is fine since the sergeant doesn't want to bothered at night by you since you haven't talked to him yet during "office hours."

This is also a neat idea from a RP perspective because someone with a mark could let you in to see the Sgt. in essence they are introducing you to him after hours.
