I have been trying to get more members of my old live guild to come here, and the one thing that has really made them weary of playing is the large blinking red letters saying "Banfest" on the frontpage. For people who have been playing a bit like myself its not a huge deal, as i know the GMs and Admins are fair people who only want to make the game better. Regardless of this fact though, any newcomer will see a masive amount of bans as a bad thing, and think twice about investing a lot of time progressing through the game.

I am curious as to the feasibility of a "public ban record". Nothing too fancy or in dept, just a list of bans and a quick reason of why. Make it a locked thread to prevent shit throwing, and a warning about starting second topics on the matter. The message on the front page insinuates a huge number of bans, and i think it would put a lot of people at ease to know that the number isnt that high, and the bans were conducted for ligitimate reasons. Also i think that it would take a lot of the heat out of OOC and the forums after each individual ban if people had a thread to look at and view the reason.


Anyhow, just a suggestion, commentary welcome.

Coming from live, being the type of player I am, I would actually view this as a positive if I saw it. Get rid of the griefers, the sploiters, and the all around ******* who make the game less enjoyable for the majority of normal level-headed (dare I say more mature) folks. I would hope folks whose play style doesn't conflict with that of SoD wouldn't be put off after reading the announcment and description of what is bannable:

If you play by the rules, there shouldn't be any concern.

I can see this as an ok idea. However, I'm a little reluctant on the volume of drama that would follow with people being against certain people being banned for whatever reasons.

As in, someone views it, and makes a thread because person X might have been banned unfairly.

I think it would carry a good deal of weight. It would give people a chance to see what the offense actually was and then they can't say that they didn't know it was a bannable offense. Granted the biggies are pretty much easy to figure out, but the ones that are few and far between, but yet enforced would be good to know. Just so the individual doesn't decide to see how far they can skirt the edge.

But then on the other side of the token, you will have a few who will try to skirt the edge just to see how far they can get. The 'Hmmmm. They got hit for that, but I bet I could get away with it.' But then again, aren't these the individuals you'd want to get rid of in the first place.
 
I see a problem with this idea, though. Well, a few problems.

1) The work, GMs are already busy as hell
2) The GMs would have to constantly defend their actions
3) This is not live, if people get banned it is for the betterment of the community.

Just tonight a friend of mine got banned, I asked him why he was so tense and he was about to lose his internet and having RL problems atc. So, someone decided to have some fun and takes this friend on a 30 minute journey on what is the last day of internet availability he has. Now, I am not defending anyone. The language and anger went way higher than it needed too. The fellow may have been doing an honest quest, planning on a reward and everything. I do not know the whole story, but I know what I saw and I was dissappointed in some behavior that was displayed.

Now, if the GM had to post the proof/reason for a ban, all of person X's friends would find any reason that the rational was not good enough and try to get it overturned. It is hard enough to be a GM without adding all of this grief. I do not see where this would lead to anything but strife.

I don't think the list sounds that problematic, except for one thing: precedent. I think a lot of people would either fail to recognize or choose to ignore the fact that the specific circumstances of one action differ from another, and so they would expect everything fitting into a broad category (harassment, training, what have you) to be treated identically, even if they really aren't that similar.
 
No. Every single time we have given players better access to anything that could be construed as precedent, it has been abused to the point where it was just retarded. Things like this inevitably become a massive hassle for the GMs and admins.
 
We don't need to see any sort of ban list. I can't imagine anyone with the right attitude being too worried about getting banned, so I don't believe it's any more of a deterrant than it's actually meant to be in the first place. On the contrary, I would think they would see that and right away feel that this was the place for them.

I did not name names and I fully support the decision that was arrived at despite being a friend to Parax/Toolis. It does make a good example of why the list would be a bad idea though.
 
see? and i didn't cuss or yell at people or argue with gms or /tell wiz i just was being goofy on /ooc like everyone else and they just decided to make an example out of me (what example? i have no clue because it solved no problems because there was none).
 
This isn't a Toolis or Shambo ban discussion thread, by the way. Discuss the main point, or don't post at all.

A name change section would be decent as well. Help me keep tabs on those people who I wish to group with or not.
Via wanelo or somethin, and at the descretion of the player if its something they asked for, not a name violation.
 
An absolutely crushing majority of players would want this to happen. It never will. There is, unfortunately, not much room for discussion :(
