Problem with no text showing

*fake Tinkerbell*
I recently aquired an ibm thinkpad, installed windows 2000, updated all drivers & windows and then installed eq, patched to live up to ldon, then installed the sod patcher, patched and tried to run it. It loads ok, i can see the general outline of the text, but no actual text. Also, where the text on the buttons should be, its just a brown thick line. Has anyone ever had this problem? Please help :)

Installed those drivers and the latest directx. No effect :(

Run the Directx Diagnostics...

Start -> Run -> dxdiag -> OK

After it tests everything, check each tab to see if you see any errors.

I get no general errors, but when i test direct3d i get errors:

Direct3D 7 test results: Failure at step 32 (User verification of Direct3D rendering): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code)
Direct3D 8 test results: Failure at step 19 (Loading texture bitmap): HRESULT = 0x8876017c (Out of video memory)
Direct3D 9 test results: Failure at step 19 (Loading texture bitmap): HRESULT = 0x8876017c (Out of video memory)

The test with the spinning cube worked ok, except for the lack of textures.

Well that's why you're having the graphics problems ... now the trick is to try to solve it.

Try doing this, un-install your video drivers from the Device Manager...

Right Click on My Computer -> Manage -> Device Manager -> Display Adapters
Remove anything listed there.
Reboot.

Or

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware tab -> Device Manager -> Display Adapters
Remove anyting listed there.
Reboot.

After reboot it will switch to your generic SVGA video driver. Then re-install the drivers you downloaded from the site I gave you.
Reboot one more time.

Try again. Not sure if this will work, but I've seen crazier things happen.

No, doesnt work. The card has just 16mb ram.

I'd double check to make sure you have all the updated drivers like your chipset drivers, etc. Sometimes that with the video drivers it still doesn't work. It is an odd video card, so it is possible EQ might not be compatible with it. Unfortunately I don't have a spare laptop with that type of video card at work.

On a side note, shot in the dark, what's your refresh rate set to? Default? Optimal? Custom setting? It would be located under your display properties.

Checked official eq boards. They say s3 cards arent supported any more after directx 9 :(
Also, Thinkpad cards cant be changed, becouse they're on motherboard. Im boned :(
So much for IBM and S3

Yeah I've found some people who've gotten around it by changing their default refresh rate from optimal to default adapter ... I don't see how that should change it that drastically, but some people have said it works.

Your other option is to reformat the laptop, and only use up to Directx 8.1 and games that support that. I know EQ used 8.1 up to at least Ykesha, I forget when they moved to the 9.0b requirement. But you might be able to run SoD under 8.1 ... not sure though.
