PR Things

Well, there's really maybe two things I'd like to address and ask about. I apologize for the wall of text in advance.

1. I mentioned this on my Facebook post, but I suppose I should also include it in a suggestion thread.

One of the things that is attractive about this game is the amount of effort that the development and administrative staff puts into it, which can be seen in their activity i.e. Being Online and having Regular Patches and Content Updates.

Facebook could use an Admin being a bit more active on there. For instance, if I'm a person who stumbles onto SoD via Facebook (even as someone who's been here for months, actually), the first thing I notice is the lack of SoD activity on the wall. I think "Hmm, ok, well I see some people saying hi infrequently.. which means it's probably still up... maybe I'll check out the website..."

Where-as, if the SoD portion of the wall is active, even if it's just Patch Notes, the Admins checking in to say "Hey, 'were working on some interesting things, can't wait to show them to you" or asking questions like "What do you love about SoD?" .. just simply being active, then the first impression is much more positive.

You can generate a lot of publicity through Facebook, but you have to use it right. You have to engage your audience, so to speak. It sounds silly to some people maybe, but it's a tool for you guys to get new players, so it would be a shame not to use it to it's fullest potential.

The website needs a similar kind of thing going on. Patches happen all the time, and sometimes there's posts on the forums, sometimes there's patch notes, sometimes there's someone on chat in game saying something about it, but there's no clear and consistent place to find out that kind of information. I'm sure you guys have a lot of your plate, and maybe even just taking on a person for the sole purpose of chatting in irc or on a voice program to take notes about the patch so that they can write something out for the admins to post would make it easier.

It's another way to "advertise" that a lot is happening in the game, and how active the staff is. Which isn't clear from the front page, when there's large gaps in between posting dates.

2. Youtube is another great way to garner interest if you know how to use it (video responses, important keywords, etc). I know there is an SoD video or two up, but I was considering trying to help out by making some video tutorials and general information videos on SoD.

I was wondering if this would be an OK thing for me to do, and if it is ok I was hoping there would be someone out there that would be willing to help me out with this.

My computer is not very good, so I'm not sure I can run a camera program at a reasonable rate, or synch up a voice over track to the video. So someone with some good video skills would be great. I have plenty of ideas, and can provide voice over track for the tutorials, and possibly laggy videos if there's no one who can help out with that. It would still be pretty helpful, I'd imagine.

Hmm... "no". I'm sure Woldaff will do more with Facebook when his RL issues stop impeding him. The GM team and Dev team are busy doing GM team and Dev team things.

As far as patch notes on the main webpage, how many "we did a patch for background things you'll never be capable of seeing" do you want? I mean, we can put up four "behind the scenes things, things that needed a patch to be tested, and working on three new cleric spells" messages, one for each of the patches in the last 7 days that applies to, but that's not really helpful.

Even if there was a collective Saturday or Sunday post that just gave a basic over-view of what happened during the patches of the week, even if some of it goes over people's heads or in your opinion is unimportant for us to know.

The important part is that a consistent place to find the information exists, and the information is more frequently updated, which would give the impression of activity to people who are viewing the front page of the website or the Facebook for the first time.

Sorry, it was just my impression that going through all the trouble of making an account drive meant you actually cared about attracting new players, and I've had a lot of experience with that type of advertising. I really enjoy this game, and while I might not be in a financial position to donate (when I am, I will gladly), I'd still like to see it grow so that you guys are no longer "in the red" on the server payments.

Or hire a social media/community support GM that relates patch notes, discusses whats happening on FB/Twitter, advertises in game GM events etc.

Well... other than the patch notes thing which is undesirable from staff view for most patches (things of playerbase significance get announced in-game, on the forums, and usually on the front page), I offer a counter-suggestion.

Nobody here gets paid anything, so the word "hire" would most closely mean "ask someone to do it". To that end, I'll ask you both to do that (as well as anyone reading this that cares). Go post on the Facebook page of the things you've encountered, seen, noticed, done, read about happening...

It's hard enough getting trustworthy members of the playerbase to give up their playtime for no payment whatsoever to answer petitions. I'm not sacrficing any of the GM Team so that the Facebook page can look marginally better. Take the initiative and start posting on its message wall or whatever that facebook thing where you can write something on someone elses space without their pre-approval... kinda like the wiki.

I'm sad that you think it would be of "marginal" benefit to your project and new account drive campaigning, but I guess it's hard to convince people who don't use those things much of the value they can be when used properly. Used properly, unfortunately, does require staff involvement of some kind, even if you take on a volunteer to specifically do it for you. It might not make sense to you, but it isn't about our taking the initiative - giving the appearance that the players care 1000% more than the staff does isn't really a great image, as that is the reality on a lot of games both pay to play, free to play private servers, and micro-transaction cash shop games. A lot these people will be coming from places like that when they're googling around for a game, and it would be extremely appealing to see a place that looks like there are administration and developers that interact with and give a hoot about players.

I can/will post on the wall, but it is probably less effective in terms of garnering players than if someone under an FB admin status did it. Ah well, beating dead horses and all that. Good day to you sir, and I still wish all the best for this game.

We know most of the players that come to Dalaya get here from word of mouth. If you really want to look like the server is engaged in promoting itself, putting up Facebook updates, at the very least once a month is enough.

People use FB, small businesses use FB, non-profits use FB, artist use FB, you get what I am saying... I do not personally love Facebook, but it's 2011, and that's how it goes. Even I have my own Facebook page and it served me well, because I was able to be reached by childhood friends from another continent I have not seen since my teens.

If there's no time to do it for the current GMs, then take on a social media GM, and give them control of the Facebook page. No regular Facebook updates equals, in the eyes of many, not caring.

as a facebook admin i feel kind of terrible now and posed a question on -the book-.

expect more interaction in the future. good suggestion/observation.

i agree and charge kiseble with this duty (as he has already been charged) also if anyone would like to co-admin facebook duties with kiseble let me know what you can bring to the table for $0 a week and we will talk turkey.

SLAARIEL: OUT!

What method shall I use to contact you to talk gobblegobble Slaar?

And thumbs up to who posted the question today, lots more people answered it than answered mine.. I think mainly because your posts show up on people's walls while fan posts won't. :)

When I first read that, I thought it said "ON ME ON THE FORUMS" and I was looking for the dog pile <.< >.> Then again, I just woke up from a nap.
