Possible new teleporter (for those who hate boats)

Just a suggestion

I recently wanted to travel to Erudin and got a little bored, frustrated etc with the whole waiting for a boat to arrive and then the trip through Stormsea etc.

So I humbly suggest making use of a couple of the old nexus spires that now basicallly serve only as wizard portals.

Would it be possible to link the wizard spire in Greenwood to the wizard spire in Greater Faydark. Ppl still have to navigate a couple of zones to get Translocators and cities, but they would not then have to rely on a boat and feel more "involved" running through the zones rather than waiting for a boat then standing on it while it zones and travels.

Just a suggestion.....
 
It feels much more like the old EQ with druid rings being just for druid ports, and wizard towers being just for locating purposes of wizard gate and portal spells.

I like it the way it is, having instant travel between zones reminds me too much of the new EQ, the way it is now. Might as well add the plane of knowledge if you do that.

If you're really that impatient, I say make friends with a druid or wizard. :)
 
I prefer it without excessive ports as well...EXCEPT when the friggin Erudin/Newport boat breaks and I'm SoL standing on the dock in Erudin for hours. That REALLY sucks.

@Wiz - Is it possible to spawn a translocator on the Erudin/Newport docks that only appears when the boat disappears? I have no idea how a boat might disappear, but it does in fact go somewhere mysterious at times and it's really frustrating to have to stand around and not be able to group with your friends because they're a continent away.

I'd like to see the player controlled ships that were discussed a long time ago. I'd certainly cruise by the docks and pick people up for a platinum or brew :D

well i probably wouldn't allow Nernigle on the ship because a drunken Ogre bouncing around could sink the ship.....
 
Issues with boats is when a zone in the boat route crashes, which isn't really detectable.

Okay, I'm not trying to beat a dead horse, but trying to come up with some sort of idea to get a workaround for possible boat crashes.

Is there a way through scripting (I'm assuming you use perl for the NPC interactions?) to have an NPC at the docks in Erudin and Newport that will offer to translocate if there is no boat for >30 minutes or so?

It's not a big deal for my rogue as I have a Newport Amulet now, but I'm thinking of all those people (especially melee who can't gate etc) who could be stuck in Erudin with no way to translocate anywhere.

Perhaps if the Translocator in Paineel was fixed/scripted this could be another solution to the possible boat dilemma.
 
Just an idea

When eqlive added the legacy of ykesha expansion, I remember that the boat to get to Ykesha or whereever it was was always there, and you just ran up on the boat and clicked on it to zone, instead of waiting around on the boat while it traveled. This created the roleplaying aspect of still riding a boat, without all the problems and time wasting that the actual boats tend to have.

I understand this could be percieved as just another use of POK type stones (which I totally thought destroyed roleplaying), but I was wondering if it was possible to set up a boat like this at the ends of the docks.

To me, this would keep the boats in the game, but eliminate the time spent riding, and the problems with boats crashing. Not sure if its possible, just an idea.
 
No that is just like a port and I think it removes the purpose of the boat anyway. The only way a port type would be nice is in the event that there was NO boat at all.

Not looking for a boat replacement, but just a save in the event it breaks.

I go LD every time I zone, and I know from reading the boards that I'm not the only one. Until this is fixed, the boats are effectively ALWAYS broken for us unfortunates. Some alternative method of travel would be nice, because as things stand, I can NEVER go to Odus, and Odus seems to hold a good portion of WR's content. Although fixing the LD problem would be even better; then I wouldn't mind the boats.
 
We prefer to make full features that we want in the game and fixing the bugs that prevent them from working right to making convenient hack fixes that ultimately makes the game feel hollow. :)

I like the travel system now. It is perfect. I've never had a problem getting around. Mistwoods ports are available, Surefall ports, Badlands, Underhill...I mean pretty much you can get where you need to go in a reasonable time. I dislike the translocers and coachmasters in way, because it just doesn't hit home like grabbing a treehugger to do the work.
