old school midi (background) music not working

I'm having a lot of trouble with the midi music (example: merchant, guildmaster, kelethin/most cities background music) working with my game. Strangely, this didn't happen half a year ago when I went back to play EQ after a long hiatus. But when I play EQ now (Live or Emu) the old midi music doesn't work.

I e-mailed SOE about the issue, but they said it was because I am using a "very very very old" launcher. I'm skeptical that's the case though since my brothers are using the same EQ I'm using to play SoD (unpatched Titanium edition) and I'm the only one who can't hear the midi music.

I'm trying my luck here to see if anyone else has experienced this before... I want my sense of nostalgia back. >_<

If you can't hear .MIDI files make sure in your Windows Volume Control program SW Synth isn't muted.

I've noticed that some onboard sound chips do not seem to play the EQ midi music, do you have an onboard or a real sound card?

I do have a real sound card, but the thing is that it died on me a couple of months ago. To accommodate, I've been using a USB port to plug in my headset/speakers.. originally I used the sound card because I've had trouble with the built-in one but it never occurred to me that my default card could be the issue...

oh and just to add, double checked the SW Synth. wasn't muted

I was experiencing the same problem. I could hear the combat music and all of the sounds, but not the midis. My girlfriend installed the game on her computer and the midis were alive and well. I asked in the newbie guild channel, /ooc, no one knew.

I came here and searched to see if anyone had the problem before and when I read this, I checked my SW SYnth and it was turned all the way down.

Now the midis work!
Thanks! :toot:

another thing to check ...

Also check Control Panel/Sounds Audio Devices, click the Audio tab, and in the "Midi music playback" dropdown, select the default "Microsoft GS Wavetable..." . I use KX drivers for my SB live and had to do this to get Midi working in EQ and UO.
