Nightly backup???

I play SoD pretty regularly...maybe 3 or 4 times a week and i'm having a blast, however, every night it's the same problem...

At 11pm MST (-7 GMT i think) one or both of my chars will go linkdead. I heard rumor that this is when the backup is made or something? I was just wondering if whatever is happening at that time could be pushed back maybe another hour or two?

That's being rather selfish of you isn't it?

I don't think it should be changed because it's the best time to do it. Less people are on at this time. Rather have it mess with a little people (80 or so) than with a lot more people (200 or so)

well...

when i get kicked off at that time its always around 100 to 150 people on...when i log off a few hours later its down under 100... I was suggesting bumping it back further because less people were on not because it was convenient for me...it isn't that hard to log out and back in...just an annoyance. I don't even know what causes it or maybe there is a way around it?

The cause for it is so that information isn't lost, so it backs itself up with everything every 24 hours (this is at midnight for some people, 1am for EST). Just try to avoid doing anything important around that time and everything will be set.

It happens the same time every night and I know it's caused deaths for more than just myself. How realistic would it be to maybe have a nightly broadcast 5 and 10 minutes before it occurs giving people a warning?

Good idea

Good idea Zhack. A broadcast would help out quite a bit, as I would simply log off for about 15 min. When the backup happens I usually find myself in combat and when I log back in I find myself at my bidn spot with an exp debt, lol.

I don't think it should be pushed back any since it is a good time for a backup with far less people on, but a broadcast is just an awesome idea. It should be really easy to impliment. Just capture the time of the server and 10 minutes before printf the message warning people of the backup.

It is the backup. Set your watch. We have several people tracking time on raids and we halt all together where possible just before the backup to avoid lag wipe.

It has to happen at some time during the day which means it will always impact someone. Set an alarm, download a timer, make some arrangement so as to minimize the impact.

.

I have NEVER done any programming for EQ - *ever* But it should be VERY simple to automate a serverwide broadcast at the same time every day.

Hey! Look! Pseudo-code!

***************************

let x = serverbackuptime

let y = "Server will back up in 10 minutes. Some people will lose connectivity for a few minutes. Be advised."

If( [current time + 10 minutes] = serverbackuptime)
{
broadcast y
}

***************************

"Set your watch" should not be necessary. The benefits from the simple effort of throwing one simple script up where *no one* has to remember the time anymore should far outweigh the effort for dozens of people to have to remember one time every time they are logged on at that time.

I'm sure far more effort goes into other "minor" things that are definately appreciated and cool, but won't have an effect on everyone on the server - this could.

I too thought about the time if this is an automated thing. I live EST, and I even said to a friend, [well it's 1am here, but those people on the West Coast probably get the boot after being on for only an hour or so]. I also thought, how difficult is it really to move an automated backup to around 5-7AM EST? Granted, I have been on that late with others, there are usually only around 60-80 people if that. I for one, hope it does get moved to a more "off" hour.

I too play in MST so at 11:00 PM each night I play the backup runs and typically will boot me or lag me to death. I understand that backups need to be made. I aslo understand that if nothing changes then I'll continue to live with it.

I've also noticed that the crashing or resulting lag has gotten worse lately with zones disconnecting and reconnecting about 3-5 mins later. It's more of a plea for some concideration for those of us who get affected during our peak play time when the necessary backup hits.

Last night when it hit I was showing over 180 when I was finally got back into the server. My count may have been off but that is what it showed me.

Just my .02 cents worth.

Nightly backup

I couldn't agree more with Pailryder and I know I could speak the same for a number of friends that play - we're all thoroughly enjoy the server and were only curious if it was possible to have the backup moved. I have no idea if the backup is a part of some process and can't be moved/changed and that's fine.
Last time I checked, gorgetrapper, Pailryder wasn't the only person on the server at 1 EST. Almost every time I'm on, it's near or over 200 at the time the backup occurs. There's nothing wrong with requesting for a number of people and I'm sure some of them never come to the forums.
I know a couple people who have the worst time trying to log in, we're talking 15-20 mins to log in (sometimes longer and yes they've troubleshot), who I'm sure wouldn't mind having a backup time change if it is possible and doesn't inconvient/interrupt Wiz and the other admin's duties, etc.
With or without the backup change, the server is still well done and it's been a blast playing.

So you want to change the backup time that will inconvenient other people just so you guys can play untouched?

The server has been doing this for a long time, and noone has spoken up about it before. It's not really an issue since it lasts literally less than a minute's time.

I think the argument is that it happens when there are ~200 people on, and there are times when there are < 100 people on, so it's a question of the number of people being inconvenienced, not necessarily who (although of course it's those who are currently inconvenienced speaking up).

The server has been doing this for a long time, and noone has spoken up about it before. It's not really an issue since it lasts literally less than a minute's time.

True, but if it wipes out your group because of the LDs during that time, it can take a whole lot more than a minute to recover.

Personally, I'd be very happy with just the broadcast reminder that folks have proposed, so that the group can be sure to be in a safe corner wherever we are when the spike hits and not in the middle of a pull/fight.

I don't want to get into a pissing contest...seriously though just because no one brought it up before doesn't mean it isn't a nuisance or hasn't been on the minds of others...yes of course it benefits me if it runs when i'm not playing...again the point was that if it was pushed back to even later it would affect even less people...I don't think anyone that gets booted any night they play is excited about that, it's minimizing frustrations...

to answer your first question...yes...i don't know if the same people are on at 11pm MST as are on at 2am MST if so then they are still inconvienenced and nothing has changed except for those that aren't on later, if its a whole new crew on at that time...well they would get to share in the problem that doesn't exist for you.

it was just a question/suggestion, one which i'd like to see happen or at least commented on by an admin but i'm not going to cry about it. As you said, no one else had posted about it (did a search to make sure), so now the knowledge could be out there about it.

I like the idea of an announcement. During SoD's hiatus I tried a few other servers, and I remember at least one of them having server wide announcements before the server would go down for saving or rebooting or whatever it had to do. I dunno how hard that would be to code, but when compared to everything else the staff has done here, it sounds like something simple that can be thrown in with a patch. Sure, telling people to just keep track of the time would work for some, but this would be a nice benefit for everyone on atm. Just my little bit of input in case it's something being thought about...

Dont you think that some people just sit by idle and dont say anything alot of times because they are scared of being shot down or being made out to sound like an idiot in front of peers by higher ups in the game? That is the case alot of times here. Most people dont want to say something because they are scared there are going to be reprecussions for doing so. I personally am on during these hours when the server does its backup and its about a 50% chance that I will get booted off or not. I know that this time was originally planned because it was supposed to be an off-peak time but lately if you have watched the server growth and how many people have been on during this time you will see on average of 170 people on at this time of backup and immediately after you will see that number drop to around 80 due to the backup. Most of these people experience the login problems that were previously mentioned and then they decide that it might just be better to go to bed. For some maybe this is a good thing and for others its just a nusiance. I personally would atleast like to see some kind of message come across 5 or so minutes prior to the backup and dont really care if they move it or not if they could implement such a reminder. The group that I usually group with is pretty good with reminding each other of the impending disaster, but there are those times that it slips up on us and we lose vital players and the group wipes. I might as well just end this now before I go on forever and hope that I got some kind of point across here.

hooray?

I'm not sure if this got officially changed, but the last 2 nights I have not been kicked off at 11pm MST. I just wanted to say thanks if it did get bumped back later!

Sometimes both my chars go LD, sometimes one goes LD, sometiems niether of them do. Just watch your clock its not hard, (happens every night 1am est) stop fighting monsters for 5 mins when that time comes aorund :/ not a big deal

this isnt bk, you cant always have your way
