Newbie question: is it possible to be self-sufficient?

Hi everybody,

I'm considering starting on SoD because, well... I used to play the ForeverSearch game and actually liked it a lot. However, one of the things that lead me to give up on it was the growing difficulty (if not outright impossibility) to remain a "viable" character without taking advantage of the grossly watered down economy. In other words, I like that every piece of equipment on my characters be quested for, looted or crafted by myself (or with minimal help, such as a 2 groups dungeon crawl or one of two specialized combines from an expert tradeskiller). It came to the point where playing this way made me so feeble vs characters who preferred to buy the powerful items farmed by higher levels that I wasn't a worthwhile addition to most groups. Moreover, it also lead to dozens of zones being abandonned because the loot wasn't ph4t enough (why take risks when all you need is exp? All the good stuff is up for grabs in the Bazaar).

Oops, there I go ranting... Sorry about that! Anyway, I'm wondering: in SoD, is it possible to play how I like to play without being completely outclassed? I realize my way of playing means I won't be among the elite, and fortunately that's not my goal. I'd be happy being an Average Joe. Are there any safeguards of sorts in place to let Average Joes remain Average Joes and not turning into Feeble Jims as time goes by?

Thanks!

As a level 30 Beastlord, I can solo using gear I quested/made myself.. I also know some level 35~ Paladin who is still using a 2hs I made them at like level 20. In my opinion, it is very possible to be Self-Sufficiant in SoD.

Absolutely without question possible. If you decided to tradeskill, eventually you could make armour that is actually good enough that there are non-raid-guilded 65's that still wear some of it... You CAN buy stuff on the market in SoD, but I don't think everyone does... not by a long shot... and it's not nearly as overrun as the Bazaar on Live was.

So far, I've bought pieces here and there, been nice to people who have sometimes dropped stuff on me when they don't need it, gathered some of the gear myself in groups just having fun, etc... you should be able to be self-sufficient no question about it... that said, you won't prolly want to try to solo yourself all the way through the game, when grouping is so much more advantageous, but I don't think that's what you were asking.

Thanks for the input. :) Indeed, I don't plan to solo all the way, I just want to play the game "as intended", so to speak. Good to hear it's doable!

hello

i have two suggestions:

regarding being viable on quested/crafted gear: do not pick a gear dependant class, which is basically anything that hits or take hits. i would highly recommend necromancer.

second, for playing solo, i would also recommend necro as they have a wide variety of utility spells, a pet and are (in my opinion) the best *overall* solo class (in terms of versatility and viability).

welcome to the server!

I agree with this.
And to confirm it just click the link in my signature, all the stuff is self-accquired with everything I got so far at Level 61 :)
If you just keep your eyes open you will be able to be an average Joe without any problem, Wiz found a very balanced way Group/Guild vs. solo, just go and enjoy the game :)

I wouldnt go necro.

1) high resists rate on many spells (making them far less efficient than live)

2) No giving mana at high levels.. (group invites will be thin)

3) lvl 49 spell "ignite blood" is missing from vendors making 49+ slow (more frustrating than you would think missing one spell would be)

Go with Bst or Mage imo.

1) I can't confirm that....resists spike yes, high resist rates in a row...no.

2) Groups usually invite me for very high DPS, pulling and CC....besides they will invite you no matter what you play as long as you are polite and not totally retarted (game-wise) :)

3) Iirc I frogot to buy this spell up to level 51 or so...you will get Undead Charm at 53 so you will barely use Ignite Blood after 53, believe me.

1) all casters have to deal with the resist rate. you think necro's dmg is downgraded due to this? try playing a wizard

2) as noted above and elsewhere, it's not the toon as much as the player behind the toon that matters for getting groups.

3) i guess this matters, but would you really dismiss a whole class because of one spell? that's assuming he'll be lvl 49 the whole time. i imagine the time affected by this missing spell would be a small, small fraction of his play time

1) I think you missed my point, necros were top soloers because of LOW downtime, FAST kills, FEW resists. No where did I say necros/wizards cant level solo? just dont expect them to be the "best" like live. I stand my my statement that a mage/bst is a better choice.

2) OK... lets do the math. SoD has what ? 100 players offpeak hours , 250-350 peak time. Now factor in duel boxers, lets say 20% duel box. (maybe closer to 40%) Anyway at 20% that leaves us 80 players off-peak and 200-280 peak.

Spread those 80-280 over ALL the zones and 65 levels and your left with no groups. Sure you'll find one here and there but dont count on it being dependable.

3) Yea maybe they should leave out KEI or the lv49 mage earth pet and see all the whiners, remembers its JUST ONE SPELL!!. Every post comes here spouting off its just one dot, so what? its necros best dot line and we NEED it. (mana efficient upgrade to boil blood).

i was having a great time playing my lvl 8 necro until i heard ignite blood was not in game what is this. how do you expect me to play my lvl 8 necro without ignite blood this is redicolus. it is critical to my class i i cannot play without it. this must be fixed.

100% of all the gear on my characters is self obtained, haven't bought a single item in the game yet. Currently my highest character is 36.

All of my better items are quested, my average items are current hunting drops, and my crap is the stuff from the newbie areas. As I run into items, I replace older ones.

I certainly don't feel a need to go out and farm plat to go buy someone else's gear at this time. Mostly I do want to go out and do more of the quests.
