Newbie advice?

Hi, I'm not really sure where to start here since I have a lot of questions. I'm loving the game, but I am looking for a little advice as I am beginning to get a little frustrated. I've searched the forums and can't really find any threads with newbie related advice.

I am to level 8 with my high elf enchanter, but I have basically no monies after buying my level 8 spells. I am wondering if I could get some advice on saving up some cash. I seem to have trouble with that. I am not buying anything besides my spells and some cloth armor back around level 2-3 or so. I kill, loot, sell loot, and repeat. Yet, have nothing to show for it. I've been fighting around Centaur Hills and Blackburrow. But, In blackburrow I can't go too deep as I'll get worked over quickly without a group. Anyway, any advice on where to hunt, what items are common drops that sell for a decent amount, etc would be appreciated. I do plan on grouping as well, so soloing areas and grouping areas are what I'm looking for. If you could be specified to group or solo area, that would be great.

Next question: Are there specific enchanter quests I can do? I also have a level 11 mage and am wondering where I find mage quests? That I do know that there are specific mage quests. Just not sure where they are and not sure if ENC quests exist.

Really any advice playing the game would help. I've spent probably 15-20 hours playing and feel like I don't have much to show for it. Granted, I do have two characters, so I'd be better off had I put all the time in one character. I just feel like I'm missing a part of the game, but can't put my finger on what I'm missing. I have no idea how people save even 25 plat. If I have nothing to show for about 10+ hours on one character; I can't see how I'm ever going to save up? Seems like I'm not getting anywhere. I love the game and want to put many more hours into it, I just want to be doing the most beneficial things while I play.
 
Basically the first 25 levels of this game (and for a lot of people even 30-35 levels), expect to be broke. Because of the increased leveling speed on the server, newb loot has a very hard time keeping up with newb expenses, especially if you are a caster, as you are buying new spells almost constantly.Don't give up, once you get around lvl 30 the loot starts rolling in, and money is twice as easy to make as it was on live. My characters had leather/chain armor untill around lvl 30, and now at 37 my cleric has 165 wis, and warrior has 150 str/dex. it really does pick up quickly mid game.

As for quests, dont have a chanter or mage so couldnt tell you.

BB is a pretty good place for loot, or make sure and give the warrens a try, lots of good stuff to sell in there, AND some decent loot drops (some stuff I might still be wearing, so you can equip your character without spending money on gear.
 
Thanks Noindy. That's pretty much what I was looking for; some reassurance that I shouldn't have money at this point and that I'm heading in the right direction. Good to know. I will keep working BB and try Warrens. Not sure where that is, but I'm sure I can figure it out when I log on tonight.

Two more quick questions to add: Is there any easy way to tell what you do with random no drop items? For example in oggok I looted Conjuring Gem of Fire and Conjuring Gem of Earth. Not sure what I can do with these.

Lastly, I looted some Spidering Silk and I sort of remember seeing a PC vendor selling them for a few plat, maybe. If this is true, the NPC vendors won't give me near that (7 silver maybe?)...what can I do to actually sell for close to what the PC vendor is selling them for? I could be wrong about the vendor selling for a few plat, I'm going completely by memory. There is a lot to remember with so many different items.
 
Spider Silk

Spider Silk is used in tailoring. You may be able to sell it to a lazy aspiring tailor, I would get a full stack and then offer it for 20pp. My 37 is still wearing stuff I looted in Warrens. It's a fun zone (sometimes), and you'll be able to keep the armor you loot in there for many levels.
 
Don't forget to Hail the named guards at the entrances to newb zones, such as North Newport for your enchanter. They give out mini quests that may be beyond your lvl now, but offer you a bit of cash for completing them and raise your faction too. Also, Hail your trainer and other trainers in the guild where you buy spells and train. They often offer you quests, as do NPC's that stand around and yet don't seem to be selling anything. Again, like the other's said, I would'nt worry too much about how broke you are in your lower lvls, they go by fast and you'll find that as they go by, somehow the money just adds up. thanks for the tips everyone. Just curious...the armor drops in Warrens - will my enchanter be able to wear it? Seems like I can't wear much for armor.

What is considered a "full stack" of Spider silk? 10? 20?

edit - I keep forgetting to ask: The compass doesn't work in this game, right?
 
The compass does work, but its accuracy relies on your sense heading. The best thing to do is put a sense heading button in one of your hot buttons. Then you map your right or left key to that number.

To do this:
1) Copy your sense heading button into an empty slot in your hotbuttons. For this example, I will use slot 10, which is activated by pressing 0 on your keyboard)
2) Go into your options, then into keyboard and use the secondary binding column (not sure if that is the exact wording or not, but you will see what I am talking about).
3) Map the number 0 in either the left or right arrow key slots.

This will cause sense heading to automatically automatically train every time you hit the arrow key you mapped it to.

I would also recommend travelling around and doing some exploring. Sure you may level slower than others, but you get to enjoy some of this aweome custom content created for the server. Most people will tell you to simply go to Blackburrow or Warrens, then to paw/mielecha/yaralith/first ruins. That's so boring, IMHO. Get out, explore, die, have fun! Just remember, if you die, yes you get an XP debt, but it maxxes at 100%, so you can die 30 times, and still have the same XP debt.
 
If you can manage to learn to play with eq windows and two box I would heartily recommend it. It will allow you to solo for much longer and much more effectively. In SOD as in EQ levels are everything. When the mobs turn green in the Warrens for example you can walk to the king spawn and if no one is there camping you can kill him and take his drops to sell or use. Just an example. I know that after taking my two toons to 50 I have 2k in the bank, my monk has two very nice weapons and a haste belt and I can make 200-300pp in an evening if I am in the right zone. It is a fun game and people are always willing to help, or at least they were for me.
 
Thanks, Arif. Question about two-boxing. After I patch and run, it loads SoD in windowed mode. The only problem is that I can't resize the window or move the window around due to the mouse activity being in-game. How do I control the mouse in Windows instead of in-game? I've tried alt+enter and it does switch from Windowed mode to full screen, but I still can't use the mouse to resize my SoD screen for some reason. Sorry, this should probably be in another forum, but any help is appreciated.

Glad to be of some help. When I first came to this game I was stumped on where to hunt and Ramblo, since departed it seems, gave me some suggestions. It was so nice that someone would help me out of the blue. It makes it clear that this game, that I for one, really, really enjoy is NOT eq live. We are here to be nice and to help each other. When the server only has 400 or so people total it seems to make sense to try to get along. If you get stuck, ask in ooc or give me a tell and I will share what little I have learned.
 
This is a wonderful community and alot is due to the fact that it's small. Unfortunately, due to the smallness, many are left to 2 box or DC due to the class they play and not being able to get a group(In all honesty tho, I think this is just to appease the grinders cos I actually found it more difficult to get a group on Live than here, except my cleric which was in high demand). However, not all of us feel that levels are everything...sure there are alot out there that grind in the popular spots and reach 40 or 50 and you see them /ooc "there's a place called Haven of Lore?" Many of us take the time to explore, there are vast amounts of zones out there and many quests still unsolved, plus many friends to be made by actually grouping up. Yeah, DC gets you through those rough times when you really can't get a group, but eventually you even see the DC'ers asking for group (/ooc Lvl 55 Monk and/or Lvl 53 Shaman LFG) So, if your one of those that feel getting to lvl 65 in the fastest way possible is the most important, well, that's grand, if not, remember there is much to learn from exploration, many drops to be found too. So, it takes you 2 or 4 weeks longer than the grinder, I for one, think you'll have gotten more out of the game and had more enjoyable times than if you raced to the end....but again that's an opinion, not all feel this way. Plus, you can die here on SoD, not have to do a corpse run and continue to explore because once you have the debt, no other debt is tacked on, the game is really set up for exploration. Anywho, either way you play it, welcome to the game, and I hope your game experience is as enjoyable as mine has been and continues to be.

I think a lot of people do the straight xp grind till 40+ simply to get into a guild. I mean the server is so small and with the handfull of guilds there are, all having the 40+ requirement (completely understandable). The begginers guild is great but it's not really a guild per say rather a nice chat area for new players to share information. The cool thing is most people 2 boxing are actually looking to group and will drop their 2nd player if the group needs room or whatever. I know a lot of people in live that would have just disbanded and gone to play by themselves. /shrug

Sorry to get off topic, as for low level loot. My method has always been save 8gp for a backpack and start looting anything thats not tied down rinse repeat until you have some nice inventory space going on. As has been said warrens is fantastic since soft leather is caster wearable and has nice lil bonus stats to them. You could start in warrens at around 14, as enc probably 12 since you get charm but it would be hairy for a few levels due to mana limitations. I've duoed there for a while now with my dru/wiz combo and it's a really fun zone and well balanced loot/xp wise.

Last night 3 of us around level 10 played Warrens. It was great, experience was amazing and pulling is simple enough that a new player didn't get overwhelmed. Too bad we were on a tight schedule and couldn't play long. :(
