New monk gear

Greetings,

I am just starting on this server and I am running an Iksar monk and a Dark Elven Cleric, so far I LOVE it.

I have saved up some coins and purchased a Mithril Ulak and a Mithril Knuckle for my monk. He also has a full set of soft leather I found in the Warrens. My cleric just has some basic chain mail and some soft leather.

With this in mind, what should I save my coins for? I am assuming I should equip my monk with the best items I can get my scaly little hands on.

Thank you for your time and suggestions in advance.

Keep saving coins, keep watching auctions / what items go for, and keep upgrading if you spot a bargain - would be my advice. Or if you want a clear goal - you can start saving the 10 million or so plat that the uber charm costs. ::p

perhaps I was a bit to vauge :D

I am assuming I should gear my monk first.

1. what are resonable jewelry items to try to buy before level 30?
2. what armor should I try to aquire by level 30?
3. what weapons should I try to aquire by level 30?
4. what stats should I aim for in my jewelry, armor, and weapons?

also, do monks do better and/or more dps with H2H, dual 1H, or 2H weapons from level 12-30?
-If I do pick up a 2H weapon, should I aim for high damage/long delay or low(er) damage/fast delay?

Sorry for all the questions, I have never played a melee class in EQ1 or EQ2.

Honestly, as a first toon pre-30, just use what you can get your hands on. Save some plat to buy a couple mithril ulaks (upgrade to warpmetal or ghostmetal at 30, watch listsold / auction for these). These weapons will serve you well until your fist ratio overtakes them, which I believe is in the 50s.

Other than that, use the armor you can find by xp grouping / questing. Starfall quests are very nice for monk and are doable with a partner at 30. Beyond that, save your plat for wyvernhide, it's about the best and cheapest all-around gear before things start getting really pricey on you (figure 100-300 plat per piece), and you see a lot of monks even freshly at 65 still sporting wyvernhide.

great item is buying the +15 h2h charm ~60pp, this also means that your h2h weapons will do more damage assuming same ratio. the "knuckle" crafted items also have a better ratio. I would attempt to pick up a 1hb/2hb just so you can keep your weapon skills. Weapons are all about ratio, but equal delay i believe the high dmg/long delay is better due to dmg reduction.

1. work on the ring of newport quest, i'd use it and try to buy some +str/dex crafting gear and then aug it with +sta
2. Wyvernhide is the lv30 leather set, around lv45 is imp hide (it is however, very expensive, i'd skip it if you are trying to gear 2 toons). your starting town should also have a quest line of some armor that is probably better than soft leather as well. Also around lv30 you can work on the starfall quest (monk gets head/gloves). At 60+ you'll want to start getting map groups and getting that gear, simples will probably drop some decent gear too if you can find a group (use the wiki to check the drops)
3. Warpmetal is the lv30 weapon set, around 57 your fists+starfall will do more dmg.
4. for leveling you probably want to try and get str/dex/agi/sta/AC. Once you hit 65 and start raiding resists become important
You also will want to pick up a haste item, i'd make it your next "big" purchase (can get a 3% from grobb monk quest). It will probably cost you 100-500pp depending on how good one you want/can afford.

Check the wiki for quests you can do, the cleric should also have some class quests for armor in its home town as well. What level are you?

Around 45-50ish you can also do your Thurg quest which is like a "starfall 2"

Dont forget to gear out your cleric as well.

Thank you guys for all the advice!

Currently I am level 13 and will probably be leveling slow...

I am going to save for that +15 H2H charm then I will aim for some str/dex/ac jewelry or a haste item. I am also looking for a good buy on ghostmetal or warpmetal 2H staff to keep my skills up.

Should I replace my mithril knuckle so I am weilding two mithril ulaks?

no, the knuckle has the best ratio of all the crafted weapons and is primary only. So keep using knuckle+ulak.

When you start xping in the warrens the 4 named all drop a quest piece for a pretty nice wrist for the monk. You should also be high enough to do most/all of the class specific armor pieces for both chars.

Cleric is a real bad idea as a starter.Druid has about the same heals
and even (25%) resses + a bunch of other abilities which will make
life sooo much easier as a newbie(Sow,invis, levi, etc, etc, etc).
Especially ports are mega important on SoD unlike live,in the time
it takes to do all the running around for the the main quest
with your Mnk/Cle combo you could level a Druid to 65 (just a slight
exaggeration).
MQ gives a nice aug without much killing involved, just insane travelling
involved.

Generally I would only invest so much in gear that you can comfortably
kill dark blues until 50+ where you start to make real money (Lasanth/
Harthuks/CC).
