Naming policy

BLIXT GORDON
Recently, I have noticed a trend starting to develop with new characters and I for one denounce it. More and more am I seeing new characters create names that are damn near exact replicas of names that are already in game and in use. The best example I can give is a level 30 monk running around named Draxxx when there is already a longtime server user named Draxx who is coincidently a monk. I wanted to suggest an amendment to the naming policy that directly pertains to the use of someone elses name in yours. It is not a big deal and I dont think any hard coded changes would have to be implented. Simply the acknowledgement of the staff that this is shitty and any infractions should be petitioned and will be corrected. I dont think this post should warrant any flames but I'm sure at least one person will have a clever one liner to toss at me. Thanks for listening.

I totally agree, but it would be really hard, even if you went to the wanelo and checked names that are similar to the one you wanted, some of them may not be in use.

There is a Veruca out there and I didn't realize it when I made my toon Veruuca. I'd be very  then, being new to the server, if someone told me I had to get rid of a valid name I chose because someone else happened to have a name similar to it. IOW, if it was done maliciously or puporsely to cause confusion that would be one thing, but I don't know if I agree with a blanket statement like "this is shitty and any infractions should be petitioned and will be corrected."

Onoz

Also you think its bad being mistaken for another char with a similar name? Try being mistaken as someone's monk.

I don't think there will ever be a rule against similar sounding names. Becuase in RL, thousands of people have the same name, sometimes spelled differently.

Similar names I dont think should be changed, my complaint is simply with people who have someone elses name in theirs...Robb would be ok, Rabbb or Rabbz would not be. I really am fearing the day that I meet a gnome warrior named Behnz or Behny or something lame. I think if we all tried hard enough we could run this post 4 pages long thinking of "similar" names, my complaint is only with people who have someone elses name as part of theirs.

I have almost convinced myself that some of the new players will log on to the server for the first time and see who has the coolest name so they can alter it slightly and pirate it. Shortly after making this post earlier for the first time ever I met a 57 paladin named Rhen, how ironic my clerics name is Rehn, but again, that qualifies as a similar name, if his name was Rehnn or Rehny then that is lame.

In other words, your statement requires ridiculous and subjective qualifications to actually accomplish anything.

People who are obviously imposting with the intent to imposter someone are supposed to have their names changed. However, it requires a complaint (from the person being impersonated) or we don't really bother.

Hehe...honestly I saw Rhen in game and yeah...I did think it was an alt of yours :-D

that pretty much sums it up, I think thats a good way of doing it, SoD is a small enough community(on the rist) that the gms can totally help you out if theres obvious intent, which is somthing I believe makes SoD great!

but if I see a kathorr your dead, dead to me!!!!!

and also other iksar wars, if I see you *does chris benoit throat slash*!!

lol at inside wrestling jokes!

All I know is that Draxxx, has a name exactly similar to mine. When he is being a dick in ooc, people come to me to complain. I think that it's bullshit to add an extra letter onto a name and claim it as your own. SoD is small enough that it gets noticed all the time. Imagine an "Oriini" or "Onoss" or "Rabbb" or "Lunaferiann." Looking quick, I'll think it's the real person telling me to to hell.

My point is that names like this should be changed based on who had it first. Each player types /played, and whoever had the character first gets to keep the name. There aren't that many names out there, they can be taken care of on a case-by-case basis, am I right?

Braxx!

I've also seen Sraxx, and another one... where did ya'll get those names? I just ask because I played with Braxx back in original EQ and he made that name up, but there seems to be something up with the X-raxx name.

@Draxx

So complain. (/petition I guess). And yes, you're right.

Can I suggest adding to the naming policy that your last name can't be changed ever?

I (admittedly stupidly) named my mage Levar Burton, but the GM who came to talk to me said I couldn't change it, so it is now permenantly an underscore.
