Naming Policy

Does anyone else think that with the launch of the 2.5 client that the naming policy should be given another look? When the 2.5 client launches there is going to be a lot of new players coming to the server to check it out and if there greeted with (read the naming policy then change your name) over and over its going to turn away some people.

Hopefully the server can make a great first impression with the eqemu community and not turn people away as soon as they log in.

Its not my call, but I'm all for being somewhat lenient on naming policy. I still wouldn't want Toady the Frog or R0xx0rsl4yer on the server - you get the idea.

Firstly, we rarely ever name flag brand new players unless their name is profane.

The naming policy is not very onerous and when you break it down it basically is: Pick a name that looks like a name, not a clever joke. None of us want to see Oncrac the enchanter or Flashfires the wizard.

Project 1999's naming policy is extremely similar to ours and may have even been derived from the SoD naming policy, so I don't agree with your claim that it will drive away EQEmu players since they put up with almost the same rules just fine.

On a somewhat related note could you purge all lvl 1s that haven't logged on in several years? Give people a heads up so if desire they can preserve their characters of course. There are probably hundreds of dead accounts holding countless names that will never get used. Not a huge thing, but kind of annoying when naming a character.

I was totally bummed to find out that Sephiroth the Paladin (obviously not shadowknight) was already taken.

ok, so I probably logged in my bot within the last year. It probably wouldn't hurt to clear out some clutter with a wave of new folks coming in.

No, all my HC characters will get wiped. Because they're dead.
All your HC toons died at level 1?

Also there's no need to wipe the level ones. I don't even see a reason to want it unless you're mad jealous that someone beat you to a name you wanted. Which if it truly fit in the naming policy (not a joke, not a popular name) then there aren't many of those cases anyway.

Ya, I am bad at this game.

You gotta be careful with that naming policy. Like if you wanted to name your character after a Knight of the Round Table, one of the most famous legends in the world, that'd be a big no no.

As Torleran pointed out, the naming policy is not THAT strictly enforced so maybe new players would enjoy recognizable names instead of guessing at a name until something sticks. Then again, maybe short, recognizable, real looking names are easy to come by...

Now I will conduct a horribly flawed experiment to see if dead character names are even a thing.
[Fomeloing some names to see how many have low lvl placeholders]
Spike - lvl1
Durst - lvl2
Chuck lvl9
Link - lvl2
Linc - not found
Aspen - lvl10
Steve - lvl1
Devo - lvl22
Bevo - lvl5
Byron - lvl 6
[Holy shit! I am just looking up semi-random names. Lets get less random]
Arthur - lvl17
Gawain - lvl65
Galahad - lvl24
Lancelot - not found
Bors - lvl2
Percival - lvl2
Lamorak - lvl11
Tristan -lvl1

How will the Round Table ever be completed now unless those players come back? Maybe some of those names are active players, but I highly doubt it.

Gawain on that list is my character as well, lol. And by the way I already had the GM's deal with my name; it wasn't something that just flew under a radar. Way back in 2007 when the names were even a bit more strictly enforced.

<From Accounting>'s guild banker - "Accountant" got name nerfed.

It's the real reason I quit.

All of my characters no longer have their original name, except surprisingly, the one I expected to get nerfed the quickest: Ribizit, the froglok warrior held onto his name even with a lot of ooc chatter from that toon.

Rip:
Whammy the Bard
Pokei the Rogue (or something like that)
Sowplz the Druid

All that being said - even not knowing the rules I felt it was well enough explained to me on my first name nerf that I wasn't butthurt or offended. In fact, I apologized to the GM that caught me.

My bard went through 3-4 names till Evye stuck at 20ish. A few years ago the name nerfs came swift lol.
