my surname

Azeth

Dalayan Beginner
<-- frauzen

Way back when my surname (Heart - Frauzen Heart) was removed for obvious reasons and despite having read the rules i didnt intend to make some kind of lame pun, it just sounded neat. Anywho, when it was removed I was given an underscore - and this was my first offense. I mean, you guys can do whatever you want, but just didn't seem fair. Was just wondering if this was permanent.

You get exactly one chance to not pick a dumb surname, because it's much harder to monitor surnames than it is to monitor names.

Sorry if this idea is not a good one, but at least it's in the right place, huh? Suggestions....

How about creating a separate forum, *WITH A STICKIED ANNOUNCMENT CONTAINING RULES (described below)* where people could post for authorization of a SURNAME they weren't sure about. Then, at the leisure of the staff, names could be either TENTATIVELY approved, or outright rejected, on a case-by-case basis. This way nobody really needs to blow their "one chance" at a surname and be stuck with an underscore. Note that this would be only for people who thought they were picking a fine surname, but for some reason, weren't completely sure. This would NOT be something that every player would need to do, the /surname command would continue to function as it now does.

The rules could be:

1> Don't post here if you already have a surname, we don't offer voluntary surname changes.
2> Don't post here with anything trying to be funny. If your request contains a play on words already outlined in the rules, don't post here.
3> Post ONE post in ONE thread, and wait to hear anything from a GM, else you are /surnaming at your own risk.
4> Don't post here if you aren't level 20 ALREADY, and no, that doesn't mean level 19 with just one more kill to go".
5> If you get a response from a GM rejecting your surname selection, do NOT argue or debate it because you don't have those options. Choose another, in a NEW thread.

Violation of the rules could result in jailing/banning/whatever.

Again, just an idea.

Well, this is just a flat out guess, but I don't think the staff is really interested in approving every surname.

As I'm sure you read in my original post, the intent was for it to be used only in the circumstances of a person not being entirely sure of their surname selection. I think that, given that the /surname command would continue to work fine, 75% of the population would continue to just use it, rather than go through the extra hassle and wait that this option would entail. Also, it would need to be established that approval of a surname through this process in NO way guarantees that it couldn't be taken away at a later date (if it turned out to translate into "Elysium is a pessimistic poster" in Swahili, or something).

In 99% of the cases, if you have to ask, it probably isn't ok. Frauzen Heart and Behn Blazin fall under clearly written naming policies in regards to having phrases. In other cases, common sense will get you far.

It wasn't hate -- just a recent example. There's another guy around named Kankir Sorez who's gonna get a big fat _ soon enough.

I talked to a couple cats in regards to their toons named "Mashin Potatoes" and "Lacey Panties." Now, I'm known to be the nice GM when it comes to name nerfing, but I definately jumped all over the "_" on those (well one was already nerfed and she wanted another surname, which clearly I didn't go for).

Point being, I think I'd like to pass on having to read a forum dedicated to something like OKing surnames. As Rabb already stated, if you have to ask, it's probably isn't OK. Not to mention the potential for massive trolling in that forum.

and if we do get the underscore, we're stuck with it for life? :)

Please say it isn't so :(

What is the numbers of words limit for a surname, i tryed to surname my character as Mon and it didnt work, should i use a >3 words surname?
I also wanted to ask a GM in game but when i petitioned i recibed a game-info saying that my petition was too short, as i didn't wanted to spam the petition service or do something wrong i decided to search some info in the forum so thats whay i ask this here, thanks. :toot:

4 chars with the /surname command, any for a GM. You can petition it so long as your first name isn't like Jamaica or Yahh.

And back on topic... While the 'if you have to ask' thing is might seem fair enough, frankly, the whole 'GM discretion' certainly leaves some room for misinterpretation. Considering the fact that the _ is then permanent, it's kinda harsh. Perhaps GMs should consider the severity of the surname infraction, and consider allowing very certain people a 2nd chance. Having a forum for 'requests' on the topic will just lead to 'stupid people' asking for stupid names... leaving the few with real grievances screwed. But. that seems to apply to a lot on SoD these days...

We very rarely nerf surnames, and if you bungle it so hard that we actually nerf your surname, you will be stuck with the underscore. People who are not retarded about it will not have their surnames nerfed; it's not even half as strict as first names.

As said, we're quite lenient with surnames, and it's not always the case that the _ is permanent. With that said, don't start petitioning for it back. You lost your surname for a reason.
