Monk Gear at 40.

This is my first run in SoD and I'm duoing a monk/sham and having a lot of fun with it.

I've found some decent items and am doing starfall quests for both toons but for the most part they are both decked out in simple soft leather.

I've searched the wiki a bit but I'm wondering if there are any items that you would consider "must have"s at my level (36 and rising), particularly for the monk.

I'm especially looking for weapons - I have a ghostmetal ulak and a fist of yaralith which are great for h2h, a broken liquor bottle which is not bad for 1hb (and so so fast) but I'd really like to skill up my 2hb. I've had zero luck finding the player-crafted ghostmetal 2hb. Is there a decent 2hb I could acquire myself or do I just need to keep looking?

Welcome to SoD first, what you can do to give an idea about gear for your char is to do a /who monk all , it will gives you the names of al th monks online at this time, so you can fomelo them and see the equipment they have, then you can check on wiki, where this equipment comes from and get a group to the zone where it drop.

Since those are your first chars, I understand that you might not be very wealthy , checking the vendors regularly gives you the opportunity to make good deal. For your level, crafted armor like Wyvernhide Armor is good for monk, the downside is that it might be a bit expansive but there is people who sells pieces at around 70 PP for th small pieces like hand or wrist.

That wyvernhide set can get you upto lv 60 and then you can improve you gear by doing Treasure map, also working on your thurgadin quest ( recommended lvl of 45 ) will give you 2 nice items.

I'm definitely planning on doing those thurg quests soon and I may take you up on your offer.
 
I stopped leveling around 35 and kept on farming Shrouded island (robes, blackbood) until I got around 2k to spend on my two chars (war and shaman, mostly on the war). It helped me lots afterwards.
 
Best bet is what knup said, wvyernhide (70-200pp/piece) and it will last you until 60+ when you start replacing it with map gear. Wrymhide costs about the same and will be nice for the SHM. I think drackehide is a lower level version and will be much cheaper, but still an upgrade over just soft leather.
- If you can get a group, you can do some maps now and probably get a piece or 2 for each simple tier up to 59.
- You should be able to duo up to newport ring3
- If you haven't already, you can easily duo your starfalls. Monk gets a nice headband/gloves, SHM gets a nice heal2 dagger you can throw in range slot and a clickie slow earring.
- You can probably do a at least part 1-2 of the MQ and get a ton of XP and a decent augment
