Mitigation?

Hey guys...so as you can tell by my post count I'm new here and I've been perusing the forums quite a bit and I've been seeing the terms mitigate and mitigation thrown around quite about, usually in reference to damage but I just read a reference to Paladins using stuns and I am getting confused.

Looking the word up showed me that to mitigate something means to lessen or decrease it, but I can't see why warriors would want to lessen their damage and paladins lessen their stuns...can you guys help clear this up for me? I've been around MMOs very little in my gaming career and never really heard the term until now.

1. to lessen in force or intensity, as wrath, grief, harshness, or pain; moderate.
2. to make less severe: to mitigate a punishment.

When talking Warrior mitigation, you would be referring to the warrior taking less damage. When talking Stuns it would be the mob lowering the amount of time it is stunned. Same with Mez.
