Mining & baking

I have some questions for the masses. I've already checked the Wiki for these and have been unable to find the answers.

I'm about to start mining soon, and was wondering about the special mining items the Wiki lists as available. Are the Mastercrafted Mining Pick & Prospector's Satchel available at the regularly listed mining vendors? Are they terribly expensive? And do the modifiers stack? My "biggest" character is currently 20, so I don't want to waste what little plat I have on two items if they don't stack. Basically for those here who have mined, would you say they are worth it? Also, any information on other items available in game, whether player made, dropped or bought, that add to mining would be appreciated.

Concerning baking, are there recipes above a triv of 75? That's where the Wiki stops. In game suggestions included picking up some of the baking books, but other than the obvious "basic" book, from the titles, it's hard to tell which ones might be for the higher end recipes.

Yes. No. Yes (subject to a cap which you can't currently hit with the items available).

If you're planning on taking up smithing, it's absolutely necessary. Others can comment on whether they think it's worth it or not if you're not a smith.

I don't believe there are any currently in game.

No. Baking is a work-in-progress (that has been stalled since the first stage was implemented. The dev responsible is no longer around iirc).

You don't have to invest anything but time to increase your mining skill, unlike other tradeskills +mining items will not save you any component costs by reducing the number of failures. At level 20 you could probably increase your mining skill more quickly by actually mining than you could save up the money to buy the Mastercrafted Pick.

Master crafted pick however is very much useful when it starts taking an extremely long time to gain skill ups and your going for that new ore

Aswell the satchell can be used to find new mining areas if you can't locate so well from the wiki via clicky

The *only* reason to ever buy the mining modifiers if when you want to advance to the next ore & not have to wait for it. Personally, on both my miners, I never bought them until I was getting close to ghostmetal & wanted the stats because I was sick of mining obsidian. The clicky on the satchel, I've used a few times.. but Wiki is pretty accurate.

One thing to keep in mind. Ore never trivials. You can mine iron until 250. You don't *have* to go to the next higher ore to gain a skill point. Which, depending on your character level, could be good, because you can keep gaining mining points until you're strong enough level wise to enter some of the advanced mining areas.

Thanks all for the opinions and suggestions. Given the explanations for and against picking up the mining items, I think i'll go price them and decide from there. It may be easier to start without them and decide later.

It looks like I won't be baking too much longer, since thus far the skillups come really easy. I'm at 60, and I got a skill point every 6 combines, so 75 shouldn't be that hard to achieve. Because the Wiki on baking does not include a separate listing for stat food, I've started one myself that has just the food name, the stats, and whether it is a snack, meal, etc. Once I get that done, I'll post something here for people to look at. Plus I'm going to try to come up with an idea for what would be a fair charge for some of the foods, based on how much it will cost and/or how difficult some of the components will be to obtain. I see people auctioning WTB stat food, but with no info on which ones they are interested in, or what is a fair price.
