Map Thoughts

Asto

Dalayan Beginner
Hello all. I played live for about 6 and a half years and was glad to hear about this server. I have been trying to learn as much about the SOD world as I could since I know it isn't the same as LIve, but is still similar. I have been looking at the zone connection maps linked on the wiki, but it is a bit confusing. I realized it is more like a flow chart then a map. The maps show northern and southern wastes of tarhyl as well as the oasis as side to side when, in game, they are north to south.

With that in mind, I started moving the zones boxes around in paint shop pro, so I can have a better idea of how the zones fit. The original map is by Ssetcik, and Ssetcik should get the credit for the original work. I just fiddled things around a little.

Since I don't have a high level character yet (Asto is just 18) I am uncertain of the zones connected to Everfrost. Are they on the same continent or on a separate one (aka velious)?

Anyway the fiddled with map is at http://dragonsthen.tanadrine.com/dalayamap.html
if you want to get a glimpse.

Yes, it was just a flow chart. Yours is also a flowchart, but with a general respect for cardinal directions. I like the way you laid it out, but there are still some areas that don't necessarily have a cardinal direction when zoning to them. For example, when you zone to Dreadfang Spire from Frosthorn Coast. You are actually entering the tower that is surrounded on all sides by Frosthorn.

To be more accurate you could put a smaller zone box (or circle) within a larger zone box to signify such places.

My conventional understanding was that it was part of the same continent. This is because there doesn't seem to be any water ways between them and you can simply run/short swim to faentharc from everfrost. However, when you load up ports it is listed as frostfang instead of "Old World" (which really should be Dalaya?). Furthermore, there is only 1 zone that connects the two. So maybe its a connection similiar to that of North and South America's connection (or Asia-Africa). Because of this, I would list it as a separate continent.

Off immediate topic: This reminds me of one of my favorite maps: Live Map

I think it would b REALLY cool if someone made a map like this for SoD. Maybe our devs could hold a contest and award a reasonable amount of fame points to whichever artist makes the best map similar to this.

Thanks for your feedback :).

Here is another question. The new zones
Deepshade
runnyeye citadel
mountain crags of tarhyl. Where abouts are they? What zones on the old map connect to them?

CoD and SoD are wrong on your map, both of those zones are off Lesser Faydark not Eldenal's Mansion.

But over all I do like your map.

If you're caring about the direction of zone connection:

Cyrtho Malath is west out of Starfall.
Obsidian Shard Mountains east out of Starfall.
Stormkeep is east out of Faentharc.
Everfrost is west out of Faentharc.
Frosthorn is east out of Eastern Wastelands.
Great Divide is west out of Eastern Wastelands.
Thazeran's Tower is south out of Great Divide.
Siren's Grotto is north out of Wyvernfang Coast.
Siren's Grotto is south out of Western Wastes.

i love this old thing myself, i even have the real poster leftover from the days of live. this would defo be a cool fame event to host imo.

I'd assume the spell-thingy is due to the client.

Can't load up the map but if it's just the old live map then yeah, that'd be awesome.

Would be some hefty fame in a map like that of SoD. Would need to talk to staff about what goes where though and be willing to do a draft or two.

I still have the cloth version of that live map :)

edit: Mmmm thats a fame event I might be intersted in trying. Would submission need to be in a computer format (like photo shop) or could they be hand drawn? or do you care?

As long as it is of the quality and feel of the old live map I do not think it would matter.

Just noticed your new map seems to be lacking Sadri Malath and its zones.

Sundered Moutains are off Oasis, Off Sundered Moutains is Warpstone, Rust, and Sadri Malath.

Question for Waldoff.... What direction is Sadri malath in relation to the rest of the world?

If I go by the old world map, prehaps between Faydar and the mainland, a bit to the North?

A fair bit south of the Sea of Swords island chain south of what you would consider between the continents

Nice map

Nice work, But I generally like
http://myweb.cableone.net/sw33t/sodzonemap.html
better;

It's all on one page on my screen. (19" 4:3 1280x1024)
I don't have to tilt my head anywhere to read the names.
It has banks and Mansion portals marked out clearer.
I generally know what zones go where.

Sure it doesn't have the newer zones but having played a Vah Shir beastlord I know those by heart anyhow.

But Great map for newer players!

Recommended fixes:
change name boxes to always be horizontal.
change the font of Mountain Crags. It's barely legible.
make the Lesser Faydark box longer so the name doesn't look crushed.
Note that the boat from Newport to Freeport does Not stop in either Storm Sea or Sea of Swords.

other than that, keep up the good work :)

Made a bunch if changes. I don't seem to have the font used in the original map. All fonts I have are too blurry at that low size. So I put the name above the box.
