Did anyone try out LOTRO? What was your opinion on it and compared to other new games
like Vanguard? The monster PvP sounds like a very interesting idea.
(Maybe fun for
a high level zone in SOD like plane of war (the unused zone), play an army of monsters against a raiding guild in
a huge clash! Anyways...)
From reading the reviews it seems like it launches in the same state as the average MMO,
with high-end content lacking and stuttering / moonwalk animations. The advancement is mostly
quest based instead of grinding.

I didn't like it. Infact, I got incredibly bored after two days of playing the open beta. I know that's not really enough time to give an MMO, but I'll compare it to EQ.

EQ in the first two days was better.

It has some neat concepts, but none of them are really unique. Monster PVP was done in EQ, the "combat wheel" was done in EQ2 (which is a great concept if you've got people who know how to play)... but what lacked was the combat. I was half-expecting some awesome combat system like DDO had, but nay. Typical MMO stuff.

The classes were neat, but if you want neat classes you'd go play VG, Anarchy Online, or wait for WAR.

The only reason I could see any MMO fan wanting this is if they are a massive LOTR fan. And even then, most fans will probably say "THE STORY IS SOOOO WRONG OMG THIS IS SO WRONG I CAN'T BELIEVE IT ASJRKJASHFKJAS" and complain the entire time while pretending to be Gimli or Tom Dumbledore or whatever his name is.

All in all, subpar MMO for this third generation of MMO's.

I really hope WAR and Age of Conan are decent.

I played in the beta for it and vanguard. Overall I liked LOTR given the beta state (which you shouldn't hold against it).
The overall main quest was interesting since you always had a goal to be working towards. I imagine it would be most fun if you had a regular group so you all advanced about the same rate (or close guild).

The graphics were ok on my box, but I had to really crack things down to run on my p4 3ghz ati x1300/256mg and 1.5gb system ram.

The 200USD for a lifetime subscription was really tempting, but to really enjoy it I would have had to also drop 300~ in a new video card to play well and I couldn't really justify that kind of expense.

Being the cheap bastard I am I tend to wait until a new game offers a free trial so I can test things out before dropping 50$. It also gives them a chance to patch some of the bigger bugs.

I was in the closed betas for it, and enjoyed it thoroughly. I went with the $200 lifetime subscription, and have no complaints. I run it on 3/4 settings on my wife's Mac Core Duo, and it runs nicely. I'll be building a new PC in the near future to be able to use all the fancy nice settings. A friend of mine runs an Athlon64 3800+ with 1.5gb and a 7600 GTS and he can run it on ultra high @ 1280x960. I run at 1600x1050.

It's the first MMO since Game to hook me enough to pay to play it.
My main is lvl 26 now, a Human Hunter. It's good times.

Playing on the Vilya server if anyone cares to play with some SoD'ers.

A friend of mine just got it, so I'll test it out in <4 hours. :monocle:

Tell me what you think of it Hom, a lot of my friends from here are playing it and really enjoying it.

I played it for 14 days, got level 15 on a Champion, then re-rolled and play with Greyson, my brother, and played a Guardian, while he played a Hunter. Overall, the game was fun but it lost its appeal after a while. I get bored of doing quests by myself, so for me, finding a good fellowship was the hardest. Grouping in every MMO sucks because of waiting, etc. Having someone that you can always duo with is the best.

Also, there's no real way to "grind" exp. as the quests make you kill creatures anyway, then you get like 500 exp. on top of the beast exp. you got during the actual quest. It's a win / win if you enjoy questing.

I do not.

I liked that it had so many quests, and grind wasn't very hard, but I only made it to level um 6 or something, since I didn't have very long. I also enjoyed that in WoW (I played Horde near Barrens area, so there were tons of quests and easy accessable leveling areas). I got extremely bored with WoW because I didn't know anyone who really played it as high end as me that I felt like playing with, and doing quests and instances on your own, or in a group that you'll never see again just plain sucked. I did manage to get in a fellowship with someone in my short time of playing LOTRO, but he didn't utter a word, and kept following me after I disbanded, so I really don't hope this is what the player population is like (like it was for most parts in WoW).
