This is a post just to help anyone else who may have been experiencing my issues.
I installed wine-0.9.49, the newest release, because of course newer is always better right?
Well after beating my head against a wall for quite some time, I finally found a post in with SlicerSV mentioned Wine versions newer than 0.9.44 have a bug that keeps the game from working.
So I went back and downloaded 0.9.44, giddy with excitement about getting the game to work. Unfortunately, 0.9.44 doesn't play nicely with ALSA in the 2.6.23.1 Linux Kernel (That's my guess at least, I don't know much about the ALSA drivers in Wine) and I was unable to compile.
I received errors referencing winealsa.drv: unknown reference to assert.
From there I found that in 0.9.49, there was a bug fix adding a reference to assert to winealsa.drv. Sooo.....
I copied dsoutput.c from the 0.9.49 tree to <source dir>/wine-0.9.44/dlls/winealsa.drv/ and presto, 0.9.44 compiled successfully.
Hopefully no one else has been having the tragic experience that I've had, but if you have, there is a fix.
Have fun, enjoy SoD and Linux.
Edit: Unfortunately, I got ahead of myself. The game now loads just fine to the server select screen, but crashes as soon as I try to login to the server. Ah, well. Back to the drawing board. Any help would be appreciated.
