Language issues on the naming policy - and a wide grin

Let me start by saying that I'm absolutely in favour of the naming policy and that I have read Rambler's thread about it. I just didn't feel like resurrecting - I'm a rogue, not a cleric ;)

Issue #1: As a non-native speaker I might violate the naming policy without knowing it. I had to look up "rambler" in a dictionary and I still don't get the Indyen thing. Indian? Undying? I'm just trying to make the point that someone debating over a name change is not necessarily trying to be difficult. I tend to get really attached to my characters and if any of them ever gets a name change I'll want to know why.

Issue #2: Allthough I understand why it exists, the non-pun rule isn't entirely fair. Froggy would get changed, and Grenouille (french) might also be found out, but Kikkertje (dutch) or Pikosammakko (finnish) would more than likely go unnoticed. Maybe a reason to be lenient on puns that aren't too obvious?

Wide grin: I strongly feel that a name change should be an in-game event, with an NPC that is spawned when a character on the GM-controlled "bad name list" enters a map.
For lower level characters it could be a Dark Knight with a huge sword and summoning who says: "You have been found guilty of violating the name policy. I shall give you ten seconds to [repent]!" Then after 5 seconds he would stab you once leaving exactly 1% of your hitpoints saying:"This is your final warning, [repent] or you shall be executed!" after which you either type "I repent, plz plz let me live" upon which you get to type in your new character name, or he beheads you - should look good in third person view.
Now for higher level characters I like to imagine a tiny little leprechaun with a poking stick who always cons green but dodges all attacks, resists all spells and runs lots faster than you, poking you to death 1 hitpoint at a time and continuously shouting "<charname> bad name! <charname> bad name!" in a very high squeeky voice... Grinning yet?

Just because the names go unseen isn't an excuse for us to become lenient as a result. It's still against policy, even if unseen.

And I agree LuciferBlack. There's no need to put in a big scripted event type thing for those who are just ignoring the rules. It's enough of a GM event that we need to contact them, let alone actually doing something cool.

Besides, it's not possible to have models being decapitated, and it's a lot of pointless work for something that could just be done via /tell and /cmd name

On live i had a froglok wizzard named: Kermit de Kikker. (Kermit the frog) No GM ever noticed it and they even changed my last name from 'dekikker' to ' de Kikker' for me =D

Hehe

We catch what we can.

IF you see a foreign violation, report it. We know a lot of languages between all of us, but we don't know 'em all.

There is a nice bonus though... The list of names keeps existing, so future likeminded people will be automagically "punished". This could save up some time long-run wise.

And I know it's possible to have mobs with zone-wide agro, and areas where a mob spawns... How hard would it be to add those names to a kos faction, and when that faction enters a zone the mob spawns and aggro's?

Doesn't need to be a GM-event as such... And it wouldn't be that strange anymore the umpteenth time someone gets whacked.

You might consider it an easter egg ;-)

As for the juicy details (decapitation, squeeky voice...) check her signature.

X.

Paying special attention to people that violate rules would really just encourage them, and have people make characters with deliberately violating names to get these special events.

All in all, it seems a waste of effort and work.

If a name is changed once nobody will use it again. It is added to a "blocked" list in the db (at least that's what I did on my server). So having a mob recognize offenders by name wouldn't work. You could have some guy running around named Phukchop and the mob wouldn't do anything. I think it's really up to the players to bring these retarded names to the gm's attention when we see them. If they think it's wrong, they'll change it. If not, no biggie. Nothing ruins immersion in a game like someone named Durth Vaydor, Deathly, or Fatso or something like that.

Now here is a question that I would like to be cleared up... Do common words found in a dictionary count as a violation of the naming policy (e.g., Eviserator, Club, Crunch, etc.)?

There are a bunch of names I could pick out from the raid level people on the server. I wouldn't want it done to me though, so I don't do it to others. The fact that I got it done to me doesn't really effect the situation.

Well for those of you who dont know
i had a Char name For 2 Years ...
was my rogue his name Was Skar Been around a Long time
but yet Recently had to have it changed
Of course i am not upset at all about it
