Let me start by saying that I'm absolutely in favour of the naming policy and that I have read Rambler's thread about it. I just didn't feel like resurrecting - I'm a rogue, not a cleric
Issue #1: As a non-native speaker I might violate the naming policy without knowing it. I had to look up "rambler" in a dictionary and I still don't get the Indyen thing. Indian? Undying? I'm just trying to make the point that someone debating over a name change is not necessarily trying to be difficult. I tend to get really attached to my characters and if any of them ever gets a name change I'll want to know why.
Issue #2: Allthough I understand why it exists, the non-pun rule isn't entirely fair. Froggy would get changed, and Grenouille (french) might also be found out, but Kikkertje (dutch) or Pikosammakko (finnish) would more than likely go unnoticed. Maybe a reason to be lenient on puns that aren't too obvious?
Wide grin: I strongly feel that a name change should be an in-game event, with an NPC that is spawned when a character on the GM-controlled "bad name list" enters a map.
For lower level characters it could be a Dark Knight with a huge sword and summoning who says: "You have been found guilty of violating the name policy. I shall give you ten seconds to [repent]!" Then after 5 seconds he would stab you once leaving exactly 1% of your hitpoints saying:"This is your final warning, [repent] or you shall be executed!" after which you either type "I repent, plz plz let me live" upon which you get to type in your new character name, or he beheads you - should look good in third person view.
Now for higher level characters I like to imagine a tiny little leprechaun with a poking stick who always cons green but dodges all attacks, resists all spells and runs lots faster than you, poking you to death 1 hitpoint at a time and continuously shouting "<charname> bad name! <charname> bad name!" in a very high squeeky voice... Grinning yet?
