With the new addition to Smithing (shields) I feel that JC is being left farther behind in its usefullness. I've read a few good ideas on older JC posts and here are some of them summed up.

Adding Wrist, Neck, Face.

Adding a slight bit Base ac to JC items. even +1ac would help anything is better and more appealing then 0.

Adding a "Uber Metal" to add a whole new tier of items made to be on par with Tailoring and Smithing.

Adding Gems that drop in specific zones that add a "Effect" to items. Simolar to jancith being haste. Perhaps a (Solid Slime)Gem that is (healing inc 1-4, pending Metal quality with some minor stats) that is a rare drop in Mielech B or C or something.

Adding +5 stat Augs like smith and tailors do.

Minor Price Tweek on crafted items Resale to Vender or minor Price Reduction on Gold, Plat, Metals and some of the higher bought store gems.

Adding minor stat bosts to exsisting craftable items

Since JC is fairly easy if you have the time and money to spend on it maybe some Crafter percs for it? Like some no drop craftable items with a silly or usfull effect as a reward.
 
It could definitely use a few more high level combines like tailoring and blacksmithing have (robe of flowing water, mantle of the forest, shadow silk, imp hide, deepmetal ) and I like the idea of TSer-only rewards, but long long ago i remember a similar thread where i mentioned that and Wiz noted that he doesn't want no-drop craftable items. Unless that's changed I think getting more combines like you mentioned would be great.
 
I have to agree with pretty much all the suggestions made, since the recent additions to Smithing and Tailoring Jewelcrafting has been left behind.The only real high end JC items are augments and platinum diamondine, which has a ridiculously hard to obtain combine item (the pearls, a fairly uncommon drop from a mob with a very high respawn time).
