If you are planning on working this skill, i can offer this advice.. dump 21 training points into the skill. work the gems in order of their cost. once a gem becomes trivial, you should be able to go back two "gems" and make necklaces if it is a valid combine. Necks are more difficult thus can increase skill with lesser gem type. Diamonds are NEVER trivial, so be warned. Gems off vendors will cap you out at around 194 skill. I never took record of what gems are trivial when, so I can't offer that info.
