Is this Legal?

Is WR 100% legal? If so, how is that, seeing as it uses SoE artwork and models and stuff.

Im trying to debate it with someone who is accusing me of playing on an illegal server based on pirated software etc...

the only software that would be pirated would be the client you connect with. and as long as you bought an official copy to install and play, its totally legit.

correct you are. it is 100% legal unless the EqEmu server tries charging people to play. Since they don't make any profit from this, it is legal.

if i remember correctly SoE took EqEmu to court and LOST

I don't know of a case where Sony took EQEmu to court, but I do know of a case where blizzard took an emulator to court...Blizzard won.

It's a lengthy debate that has gone on forEVAH. In the end? Don't worry about it. Buy the copies so you do your part. The rest is nitpicking that I find rediculous.

Enjoy!

The emulator was using leaked code that was the property of Blizzard.

We don't.

when you buy everquest you buy the client, and heve the right to use the client program. All the atrwork is in the client program that you have bought and paid for.

If you want to have an account on the SoE server, that costs a monthly fee.

Now EQemu have made a program that behaves much likes the SoE everquest servers. As far as I understand they have coded all this themselves. This can be debated if it is legal, but most people claim it is. It is not different than someone setting up an online store using the look and feel of Amazon. As long as they do not claim to be Amazon or use the name, then ideas and design from others is perfectly legal (just like EQ has taken a lot from other games).

So EQemu is a game that resembles Everquest and uses the same client. I am not even sure cerging money for it would be illigal, but im not legal expert.

oh it sure would be illegal. If you need the SoE client to access it and it costs you money that SoE doesn't get... And the source code I believe comes from EQLive.

Stop me before my foot gets too far down my throat, but i believe, atleast in the beginning, the code for EqEmu came from...what's the word...it's like a data miner logger thing. I remember they kept asking more and more people to run it and submit the code. Then they patched all the code together and BLAM! It all blew up, so they patched...and patched...and patched...and now it's pretty good. Just some tweaking here and there and putting out fires as they spring up, plus adding new content and ablities.

It's like if you copy a VHS ...uh, i mean, burnt a copy of a DVD and it "falls into the possession" of someone else, it isn't illegal for them to watch it any more than it is illegal for them to borrow your original copy. However if they try charging their buddies to watch it or try and rent it out / resell the copy ( :china: ) then it would be illegal.

if i'm wrong just tell me to STFU tho.
