Installation issue - cannot start game instalation

All right, so I apologise if this is solved somewhere in the official FAQ, but here is the issue at hand: I can't install the game. When I attempt to install, I get an error message saying "Setup has experienced an error." the error code is -6001.

Othere important information to detail: My system is a dual Xeon (not a dual core processor, 2 independant p4 xeon CPU's) And my OS is Windows 2003 Server 64 bit Enterprise edition (don't ask, just don't ask...)

I have found hints and snippets through google that indicate there might be some issue with 64 bit OS's, I have also learned from browsing this forum that people have issues running the game on dual proceccsor/core systems and seen many fixes posted. Unfortunately those all require you to get as far as RUNNING the game, while I meanwhile cannot install...

I should probably also mention that I am not installing off CDs. My Game disks disapeared long ago, but I had a backup stored on my fileserver. I DO ligitmetely own the game, I'm just not very good at keeping track of physical items...

Any help is greatly appreciated;

If I had to guess, the issue is with how you are trying to install the game. How old is the backup copy of the game directory you are trying to install from? If all else fails, I'd try to locate the CDs or purchase another copy of them (you can find them for as little as $10-15 on amazon.com). Make sure you are following this process step-by-step.

Would that it were, but I'm not even getting as far as the starting installation. How does the .NET issue manifest itself? I'm not certain if windows 2003 requires .NET framework since it is, technically, a .NET-based operating system. Unfortunately I'm not at home to check this, but I'll find out tonight. Thanks!

All right, so I've confirmed that I ahve levels of .NET framework that those of you with XP can scarcely dream of (Read: version 3.5) And thus that is not the issue, unless of course my .NET framework is just to super special awesome for Everquest to cope with, in which case... I dunno, I guess I'll need to get creative or something. EQ doesn't have particularly stringent operating requirements, does it?

Hmm... I could have sworn that you really need to have .NET version 1.1 for things to behave properly...

From what I understand, to run SoD you need an older version of .net framework (version 1.1 to be specific). Conveniently you can have both versions installed at the same time.

The resolution!

For clarrification: I have every version of .NET framework imaginable installed, from 1.1 to the mythical 3.5.

However, I have just attempted to repeat my instalation process on another computer, this one running the exact same version of window but in a 32 bit flavor(Windows 2003 Data Centre Edition) and it is going off without a hitch.

Conclusion: Everquest is not compatable with 64 bit versions of 2003. There may be other facotre contributing to this, so for the sake of posterity let me run through the differences between the two systems:

System 1)Windows 2003 Data Centre Edition 64 bit, dual xeon 3.2ghz hyper threading enabled.
System 2)Windows 2003 Data Centre Edition 32 bit, single P4 2.4ghz, no hyper threading.

Keep in mind the original issue is that the software instalation would not start, I still haven't gotten as far as trying to set up SoD.

Anyway, that's where we are now. Problem appears to be linked to 64 bit windows. Is there anyone else out there running this game on a 64 bit OS?
