Inns

The inn idea sounds neat, but I don't know that having it kill debt is that great of an idea. If it's too fast, it trivializes the penalty for death, and if it's too slow, it's not worth it except for just idling there, which just puts more strain on the server as people just sit to restore debt because they are too cheap to pony up the plat.

That's a good point, and beyond debt, there just isn't that much there for an inn to do.

Mmm.. Inns could have a greater purpose.. yes.. I like the idea that you would gain some power-ups when logging out at an inn.. of course only to a certain limit. Nothing too big. Like 10% haste for 1 hour or +100 hp (or some AC) for some time. You could choose the effect by buying a room key. Each room has a different effect. Prices and effects could vary between different inns.

Also! Inns could indeed speed up the regeneration :) That's what inns are for. Resting. Lol, taverns could also like boost your alcohol tolerance skill! :D What else do people do in taverns than just socialize, eat and drink? Of course in SoD, find quests etc. Hmm, there could be tons of ways to use this system.. These are just something I came up quick. Hope ya like.

When suggesting ideas, I'm making the assumption that Inns are the place players go to socialize, so instead of players all sitting outside Newport Bank, they'd be doing stuff at the Inns.

Some random ideas:

1) Inns can have games to play. Gambling / Poker or Blackjack Games! (with other players) / Gems Tournaments! / Drinking Games / other stupid stuff to socialize. NPCs can host the games, with small consumable items or monetary rewards as prizes. Depends on how tough it is to code.

2) During opening hours, Inns could serve drinks/alcohol that boost stats/effects not attainable via Alchemy. Instead of the Shaman Guildmasters that cast SoW and whatnot, the effects could be obtainable via Inn services. Inn Services could consider adding drinks that have other effects such as ultravision (the irony of Gnomish Beer!).

3) During evening/closing hours, Inns could slowly regenerate zone new area bonus experience. (I realize that zone experience is now all reset so this idea is now invalid).

4) Like others suggested, during opening hours at the Inn, players can pay a reduced fee for soul debt removal. 10% off the regular price?

5) Inn Merchants could pay 10% more for player-sold goods during opening hours. Interesting idea: Inn Merchants could buy items from players that regular NPC Merchants don't buy. Maybe randomly, Inn Merchants will want No Drop Items from xyz zone for 1 week! Players can then farm those to sell to the Inn Merchants. This might be interesting to put more focus and attention on some unpopulated zones.

6) Scavenger Hunt games! Similar to above idea, once every xyz time, Inn Merchants could ask adventurers to search far and wide for xyz item, and the merchants will reward players with certain rewards or money for the hand-ins. # of Hand-Ins are of course capped.

7) Inn Merchants can be Town Criers that randomly spout "hot zones." Random zones can have a bonus to area exp or ZEM, and the Inn Merchants will announce them as rumors. Or, they can announce "rumor stories" about which Adepts are up.

Other random ideas to come soon.

You characters should get tired after 24 hours of not spending 8 hours in an inn bedroom, being "tired" would make HP Mana and Stamina regen all cease and then occasionally your character would go blind because he/she is "nodding off for a few". I think this would be a really great way to piss people off and should be implements ASAP.

I almost went off in a fiery post of rage. But I decided to read your whole post. Don't scare me like that.

Edit: Just saw this

With Lyte's idea for making Inn's more of the attraction then the bank, i thought i should mention this, tho its not really a suggestion for the area inside of an inn.

What about travelling npcs, Heros/Sages etc, that travel from city to city stopping at the inns/taverns, with stories, lessons, and items they've found on their journey.

For example, you walk into Fish's Tavern and see an Barbarian Warrior npc named Great Angus Masson resting at a table observing everyone. You walk up to him and hail him and he replies "Greetings Lad/Miss, what can the Great Angus Masson do for ya" then giving you dialogue options, one being "May i ask why your called the Great Angus?" and he replies "Course ya can, and i'll tell ya, but can you go buy me a couple drinks, it's quite the story." Then you can buy him a drink, different drinks giving him different responses and having a different story told. Say you buy him a couple ales and he tells you about how he once rescued a family from a burning home while fighting off a group of bandits, and after following the dialogue to the end of the story, you get a message saying you've been inspired by heroism (or other types of inspiration based on the dialogue) as well as an hour long buff increasing your Stamina and Regen (or slight run speed increase, atk pwr, etc) After you recieve the message and the buff, the Hero/Sage thanks you for the drinks, and for listening and says he/she is off to the their room at the Inn to rest for a bit, where they disappear for 15-20 mins before the show up again, but this time they are at the Tavern at the Inn, or in the Lobby, etc.

Doesn't just have to be a buff, it could be while in the Lobby of the inn they are selling rare items they've found on their journey. (and a limited amount of them, and probably all NO DROP to prevent abuse) Maybe weapons or other equipment, maybe a researcher that came across some spells or potions, (ones that normally drop, also NO DROP here tho) could even have a collector looking for some items on his travels.

Ok so maybe im getting a little off track, too many ideas >.<

But as for a suggest of something to have in an area of an Inn (Tavern, etc), you could have travelling minstrels that sing a song and anyone sitting in the radius of that song long enough could recieve a buff?

Ill probably add more to this later, just thought i would add some ideas and give a little detail into one of them =)

I like the idea of making Inns more of a focal point in the game. When I first played everquest I was disappointed that Inns served no real purpose except to drop items for my other characters in the back room.

It would be cool if you got some sort of benefit from resting in one. It would make sense to me to give you increased stamina and speed (both running and haste I guess) and would add a nice sense of realism. There shouldn't be any negative effect for someone who chooses not to rest, but resting up before say a long run or a big fight would, as intuitively as it seems, have at least some benefit. You could even argue that resting would increase your mental condition and maybe give casters some type of bonus as well.

Inns have vendors... that in itself is a great use.

Maybe Adding a along with selling thier normal acholo and water/food, some potions?

I think most Inns also have guards to.. os if thier out in the wilds thier safe places to rest and what not.

Inns should also be a home to Quest NPCs, how many thousand of adventures have started in a Inn/Bar?

Increaseing Resting/remove Debt lose sounds like a coding nightmare and a encourgment for people to jsut sit around in Inns instead of playing the game.

If you want increase hps/mana reg... maybe the easyest way would be to put a Bard NPC in every INN thats just spaming his healing song and Mana reg son.

just my 2 cp
