In game map arrow please

When I use the ingame map I am really glad it's there as it helps me navigate through zones but it's kinda frustrating that you can only see your location until you start moving. It would be really nice if the dot was changed to an arrow or something that would display a direction of some sort so I knew exactly which way I was facing before I started moving. I've noticed this over and over in outdoor zones where it's difficult to know which direction you're heading regardless of how well you know the zone.

There's no real way to do this, as the map portion of the UI just animates a static dot there. (or +, if you will).

The best way around this is just to train up your sense heading skill.

The dot becomes an arrow once your sense heading is high enough. I dont know the exact number but I believe it's 100 sense heading. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

191, to be exact (and if it is like in the other world)

And please consider, that a good number of us old fashioned gamers played this (or THE OTHER) game without ANY MAPS. kkthxbye :D

Lol, represent!

I played eq since june of 99 at the highend raid game. I still have a 70 necromancer in a guild that's currently raiding demiplane. All the map stuff was put in LONG after I leveled up so the whole arrow at a certain sense heading skill level is way after my time. I never knew the dot changed to an arrow because my sense heading was always maxed. The only thing I'm a noob at is being a noob : p

LOL, Yeah buddy!

On live you couldn't skill sense heading to 200 at Level 1 :D

(before it was gimped, of course)

Hah, printed maps... that i can remember. I never really did learn to use /loc correctly, or at least affectively.

who could use loc effectively? Even with lots of math classes where I understood the signs of the specific coordinates it never seemed like north was up on the grid and south was down. I just got used to running a certain direction and hitting loc like 5 X to see what the loc trend was and change direction until I found where I was going unless it was a zone I just knew very well. Some zones were so huge or used so infrequently you never did learn them well /shrug.

Warning: Deviation into geekdom

The key was to realize that the X axis was flipped, so that as you moved East (or to the right side on a map) the X coordinate got lower instead of higher. The Y coordinate, however, was as you would expect; moving North made this number increase.

It's easy to see this on any of the EQAtlas maps.

EQ uses an X, Y, Z system of coordinates. Unfortunately, everyone at "company" failed geometry. /loc returns coordinates in Y, X, Z order. Then you have to look at the map and figure out how they oriented it. In one zone running East may be increase your X coordinate while in the next zone it may decrease it. The same thing with north/south. I've intentionally avoided getting comfortable with "company's" version of a coordinate system because it might someday screw up something in RL like, say, READING A MAP!

I recently tried playing without the in-game map, it's a total blast from the past - for good measure I even removed the key binding :p you have to be there when you're lost in Greenmist or Mistwoods and you press backspace to open the map, and nothing comes up :D

Suggest my fellow old-skoolers try this themselves and see how it suits them, it really makes the world feel alot bigger, and you instantly find yourself paying more attention to your surroundings, paths, landmarks, signs, etc.
