Idea for consideration.

Before I get to my point I would like to preface this with the reason behind my want. I am currently a Mass Communications Major working towards finishing up a bachelor. At my college I DJ for the campus radio station only 2 hours a week and have a blast doing it. Something I have been considering doing was starting my own internet radio station so that I could get more experience with DJing and have something that looked a little bit more impressive on a Resume once I graduate and start hunting down a job. The hardest thing I for see about getting an internet radio station up would be getting people to tune in; and for that sake keeping a steady audience attentive over several months. That is where you the Winter's Roar community comes in and where my question for each of you takes place. I wanted to start the show for the winter’s Roar community where people could come attended a live show. We could meet in a central neutral location that all could attend and hang out while we all share interest in music and make requests. The Dj could hang out live and appeal to all who come in a Role Play environment. Now I will give props where they are due and admit I got this idea from another Simi-well known MMOG called Anarchy Online. They have something exactly like this and it did very well on AO. Honestly I don't know how well it would do on WR on in a Fantasy based game for that sake. Thus why I want to hear what you all think. This would be something that all who wanted to could help out and would help provide an excellent service on the net to promote WR. Any ideas or suggestions would be great. Ideal I really just want to know if you would like to see something like this come to WR; if the response is highly positive I'll move on from there.

Guess you could look at it that way. However, a rave would imply that a specific kind of music was played. I would rather see a varity of music or atleast a varity that appeals to the community. IE, don't want to play rock&roll if no one wanted to listen to rock&roll. Think of it more as just a live raido station that has DJ's that have virtual characters in game. However it wouldn't just be for people who came to hang out at the live location. It would also be for those out on the hunt.

Yes, I am also sorta confused. At first I thought you meant in RL, whitch would be impossible with people all over the world, then I thought ingame, but how could we share music or do any 'party' stuff in game...so then I was like hmmm and so clarification would help please :p

If you wanted to do it ingame, you would be better off making a thread in the public forums maybe? or try elsewere then WR, as i bet a lot of players are dorks (J/K J/K!!!)

Im sorry, i posted before this was posted, but I am still unclear, it still sounds like it would be in game, as in 'while playing WR' and yet how could we hear your music? Sorry that I am dumb :sadf:

No problem. I see how I assumed a few things. There is a program called shoutcast that alows you to broadcast a live audio stream. Several stations out there do this as just a raido station for music like you would hear on the radio. Many can be visited from http://www.shoutcast.com/ . There are some third party companys who sell servers that can cator to this need, or you can do it from your own PC (however your limited to how frequent the station is up due to Bandwith and how many people are allowed to connect to you). The way people would DJ would be along the lines of loging into the server with a user name and PW and from there would then have control of the stream. From that point on anything they played or spoke would project on to the stream. All whom are tuned in would recieve the signal.

*PS* That seams lots clear ;). Let me know if still confused.

Perfect Clarification, thanks. And I love the idea. What types of music do you like to play? I posted like some of my favorites, or are you clasical, hard rock, rap? I would come anyways though ;)

Personaly I like several sub genre's of Electronica: Trance, House, Freestyle House, Techno Trance (not Techno). Artist I like the most are Paul Oakenfold, Timo Mass, Crystal Method, Chemical Bros. However I would still mix in a little Alternative / Classic rock. Pink Floyd, Korn, Led Zeplin, Lynrd Skynrd, Smashing Pumpkins. Altho this is strictly my personal taste and is not limited to what other DJ would pick for their shows. But despite what my band tastes are I would rather play what is requested by those who show up and those on the hunt. Cause being a DJ isn't always about playing what you want (well part of it is ;) ) but playing what everyone else wants.

I think he's talking about something like MMO Radio, which isn't very popular on Everquest but is more popular on other games.

Basically, MMO Radio is a streaming audio "radio station" that you listen to via Winamp or your MP3 player of choice. What makes it different from regular streaming radio is that it's tailored to the particular MMO server. For example, there might be a Morden Rasp station or a Sullon Zek station. (I used to play City of Heroes, and there were server stations for CoH.)

Not only would you have a DJ online on the particular server to take requests via tell ("this one goes out to FunkyDrood who's killing sarnaks in the Dreadlands...") but you might have server-wide announcements, "Congratulations to UberGuildX who just killed Quarm for the sixth time!" or whatever.

This may or may not be what he's talking about, but it kinda sounds like it.

I have no thoughts on the idea, I'm new to Winter's Roar and don't know the community at all, so I dunno if it'd go over like a lead balloon. I've just played on games that have had this. It walks a really fine line between cool and annoying, IMHO.

Sounds entertaining.

I'd go for it. Atleast until I decided if it was crappy emo shit.

Play Nirvana, Pearl jam, Led Zepplin, tom petty, and I'll be your biggest fan.

Ya'll do understand that my overall idea includes a diversity of DJ's to tailor to all tastes. And even with that requests would be considered main priority so long as they don't shy to far from the DJ's genre. As stated before my show would be Electronic, Alternative, and Rock. So just about every band mentioned on this thread would fall into that category. Really tempted to start this up next month once I get a little bit more cash. Looking into broadcasting with www.live365.com and doing their basic membership. However that basic membership only allows 25 free listeners (their VIP members could get in regardless). Despite the low amount of allowed listeners I think the small size of the WR community would tailor very well to this. But before I invest any money into this I’m going to host my own server to accommodate a small audience to see the level of interest using shoutcast plug-in for Winamp. I will be working on this, this weekend and seeing what I can get set up by Sunday. Please post some requests for what you all would like to hear (I know you been doing that anyway :)) but keep them coming. I'm very flexible but I’ll let you know if there is something I won't play. Also be forewarned that this stream WILL NOT BE EDITED. While I will take the steps to avoid excessive vulgarity I will not edit any music or myself on air. Any one who finds vulgarity overly offensive please note this.

One more thing, I would like to hear ideas of what would be a good night that people are on. Want to avoid doing this on a raid night the first few times so that turn out is week due to guilds raiding. So along with your music requests please post nights that you would be on WR from 8 CST - 11 CST.

I don't know raid nights seem like the best time. What better time to play music than when everyone is listening. At least that's my opinion. Plus you could get immediate shout outs.

Most saturday nights 5ishpm - 10ishpm (est) have 150+ players on. Thats when I play the most and others too. Thats my recomendation! Good luck, it sounds fun.

Wow, First off thanks for the promp responces. Today I'm working on setting up my own Shoutcast server however due to my limited upstream bandwidth I think that I will only have enough bandwidth for a very small number of listeners. This number is still unclear but I will announce it later in the week. My goal for this week is to get things set up to run a debut show to test intrest this saturday at 7pm CST in Nexus. t will run for 4 hours maybe longer if the turn out is good and if I can scrape together enough music (I'm sure I can). For the debut show I would like to do raffel (Got this idea from the raido station on AO www.gridstream.org) Since I don't have much loot I will put up what little I can and depend soely on donations for this to work. Would be kewl to see a small ammount maybe a 100 - 250 pp give away durring the show. The contest could be done in number of creative ways. Any ideas would be appreciated.

You can listen to music anywhere, even if you’re not on WR! You could listen in a plane, you could listen in a train, you listen to it on a bus, you could listen while you dust (I love Dr. Seuss). As long as you have an Internet connection and any kind of audio player that can play streaming audio you will be able to pick up the stream. A good one IMO is winamp: www.winamp.com, although your not limited to many other players including but not limited to: Real Player, Microsoft Media Player, iTunes, etc. If your media player can open a link to a url you should be set. To enhance the listening experience I'll be in Nexus hanging out along with anyone else who wants to join in. We may do some games of some sort (if getting drunk in WR works we could do drunk wrestling and have people take bets on drunken' duels) also any contests that may occur (I NEED CONTEST IDEAS) while listening to great music. Or if you’re not the idol social type and just want to listen while you xp/raid/tradeskill that is just find as well. I will take requests via /tell and via /say. However I'll give priority to requests in /say just because, yet will still play requests to those out on the hunt.
