I need help, my system is Borked :(

Hi guys. I am at wit's end. My computer got so bogged down with fragmented files, and spyware, that I couldnt even open up a folder without going through startmenu-run first. First I reset the comp to a previously saved state (which was saved AFTER I joined and successfully played WR). Then I rebooted to safe mode and ran my ad-aware anti-spyware program, and killed all of the spyware on my computer.

Then everything went downhill. I can now open folders, and my comp runs lots faster now, but now I cannot log in to WR, or any online game for that matter. I checked my firewall settings, even going as far as turning it off, yet nothing works.

WR freezes at the "connecting to the servers" part of the login screen. Every other game is aproximatly the same.

Any ideas guys? I really want to play online again. :)

I might just reformat my computer, ditching the PoS Windows XP for the less PoS Windows 2000, but that's a last resort.

Sounds to me like you should reformat anyway. Using that system restore stuff can really hose your computer if you don't know exactly what it really does.

I would save yourself the trouble of trying to fix it, and take the hour or so to reformat and reinstall XP. Really isn't that much trouble, as long as you have all the software, etc...

I would definately go the route of Reinstall. I wouldn't drop WinXP entirely - the fact is - spyware and the like generally only gets on a system due to some action taken - be it downloading questionable programs, visiting questionable web-sites, etc, not patching Security Updates.

W2K may seem less vulnerable but there are plenty of things that will affect it all the same.

Thankyou all for the information, however I dont currently own an XP cd (the one that came with the computer is now lost).

I currently have a Windows 2000 CD which I can boot from.

Are the instructions the same?

I thought all I would have to do is put the CD in, reboot, and follow some instructions, i guess that's wrong?

It definitely isn't just click and go, but if you have any experience with reinstalling it shouldn't be to bad. The problem with going to 2000 is, do you have a KEY for 2000? The XP Key will not work with 2000. You could probably call your computer maker, and get a replacement CD for the lost one. You could always go the route of buying a new copy of XP, which is about $80 for Home and about $150 for professional.

I would definitely check for a replacement first. If not then try 2000 if you have a key. If not then look to spend about $80 for XP Home.

Reinstalling, put CD in CD-Rom, then reboot.

If you have a bootable CD-Rom and that is selected in the BIOS to boot to CD-Rom, the computer will boot from the CD-Rom.

If the computer does not boot from the CD-Rom, you will have to enable that in the BIOS and set the CD drive to boot first(this second part is not always neccessary depending on BIOS/Motherboard type). Save and exit and the computer should now boot from the Cd-Rom.

Very first thing that will come up is asking for additional drivers if you have devices like SCSI hard drive/Raid setup/etc. Press F6 and load those drivers.

Next thing the computer is going to ask is about your current installation. You don't want to repair. You want to format and install 2000 or XP. (I can't remember exactly what this all says, but make sure you read exactly what the computer is telling you.) You should not have to repartition the drive unless you want to do that.

After you start the format and install this is pretty much automatic. Just follow the onscreen instructions.

good luck

Hehe... Enter, F8, Esc, D (to delete the current partition), Enter, L (to lose the data), Enter (on unpartiitioned space), Format using NTFS File System Quick.

That is XP - about the same for 2000 if I recall. Its sad that I can walk you through a reinstall in my sleep.

I do indeed have the CD key. It's a legitimate copy of Windows 2000.

I'm thinking I can probably royaly screw my computer up if I don't do it right, so I might just bring it over to a friends house tomorow. He's a computer programmer, he might even be able to fix it without reformating. ;)

Thanks yall, hopefully I'll be back to WR within a few days. :)
