How do damage bonuses work?

I have a quick question.

Say you see, like, "Magic DMG: 3" on a weapon that has a damage of 5.

Does that turn it into a damage of 8 weapon, or does it just add "3" non-melee damage to each of your attacks?
I'm assuming it's the latter because if it's the former, that's a huge amount of damage. I just wanted to make sure so I can be a more educated shopper.

Thanks!

If you get a weapon thats 5/25 with +3 disease damage, then its basically an 8/25 weapon assuming the additional disease damage isnt resisted. So if you fight a disease resistant mob the +3 bonus may be resisted often resulting in lesser damage, however if you fight a mob suseptable to disease damage then your damage will be based off the 8/25 again resists still come into play but your overall dps would be higher =)

Uh, wow, so at say level 10 if you had a 5/25 weapon with say +7 cold damage you could go from doing 12 damage to like 30 or something?

If you had a 5/25 weapon with +7 cold dd you would go from doing 5 dd to 12 dd (12/25) on mobs that had low/no cold resists.

There is also a damage cap on sub level 20(?) I believe that prevents hitting for over 20 points if I remember correctly. Not sure if a damage bonus will let you exceed that or not, so don't think that is possible at level 10.

Dmg cap

My monk has the Feral Scepter and I can tell you that the damage cap is not 20dmg before level 20. It could, however, be 20 dmg before level 10 or something, because I remember a jump from about 20 damage to about 30 on one of my levels, but can't remember for sure what it is.

I wasn't certain and didnt find much on a forum search (but I remembered it and a search did show someone else posting that some time back) but I still wasn't positive if that held true. I guess I could always get a decent 2 hander on my 17 ranger and test it out. I wouldn't doubt it you can exceed the cap earlier than 20.

The point of my post was that like +7 damage pre-multipliers is very different from +7 damage on the end or whatever.

Like, if you have a 5 damage weapon, you certainly aren't going to do 5 damage withi it, you're going to do at LEAST ten.

And so on.

Damage cap doesn't exist anymore.

Of course, with all the new level restrictions on weapons there really isnt a need for a dmg cap.

That's the point, yes. When did you turn into such a shitty poster?
