hi everyone,

i'm relatively new to WR and I'd just like to say that I think you guys have done a good job so far, it's a very refreshing change from EQlive. Although, I am having a hard time picking a character to play here.

I'd like to start up a new character and im considering 2 classes mostly - ShadowKnight or Ranger.

But I don't really know much of them as they are here on WR. Are either of these classes significantly different from their counterparts on live?
While answering this, I would like you to consider:

-damage output (particularly with regard to ranger bow dmg)
-spells
-AA's
-any special abilities / disciplines
-solo abilities
-quality of non-raid loot specific to those classes.

And finally,

Are there alot/too little of rangers or SK's on WR ? Solo'ing is nice (especially if ranger bow damage is anything like it is on live) but i'd hate to level a character which no-one generally invites to groups, either because their role can be easily filled by someone else or because they have no real use.

sorry for the long post,
and thanks in advance.

Either is good, you will get the same amount of groups regardless. Just go with which one will be more fun to play, don't worry too much about "will people need me?", There's not enough player on the server to be picky about any class really.

While I have never played on Live, I can attest to playing a ranger here on WR to be quite fun, and very challenging. I have had no problems soloing up to mid 30's (so far). And, though I believe I could solo at any level, at high levels (50+) it would be more economic to group, considering how long exp gain takes when solo.

As for AA's we have many, including the most important ones needed for our class, such as endless quiver, archery mastery, headshot, etc.

As for dps, we rank quite good here. 95 dps melee and 110 dps with bow. We fall second to rouges, for melee dps, but have the overall highest dps when using a bow. We get almost all the spells available, the few left out are useless anyway.

Planned to replace disciplines, we get various, and very cool, combat styles; check the ideas/dev forum for a complete list.

As for non-raid loot, Rangers get a few very nice class specific items, but there could be more. However, there is plenty of good armor, and 1hs weapons wearable by rangers (and others) that are obtainable.

As for grouping, considering the current low pop of players to group with, no one is being really picky about who to group with, right now groups will take anyone, for the most part. And, I believe rangers never faced a problem being selected for groups, with our excellent pulling and peeling abilities, any smart group would gladly welcome us as an addition, be it they need a paper tank, or added support.

There weren’t as many rangers when I started here a little over a month ago, there are a few more now, but not so many that another could not be useful. Imho.

As for SK's, well never played one, so know nothing about them.

Hope that helps,
~Darkartist

Allow me to add a Ranger does not get to 80-110+dps until they near their last levels and buy up a bunch of AA abilities. Until then they are quite mediocre, if not below average, tank/dps classes behind the 2 knight classes. Even with the AA's Rangers still cannot stand toe to toe with high level mobs for more than a few seconds and are used more as extra dps/radar than anything.

Shadow Knights, and Paladins, at higher levels make great back up tanks if a pure warrior is not avaiable. A SK can really pump out some hate points on a mob with it's spells but it's pet is almost all but useless the last 30 levels or so.

SK's do not have all their AA's activated though.

As far as group pickiness goes clerics are the most direly needed class on the server. There just isnt enough healer types in general to support group exping outside of preplanned close knitted groups. A group without a tank will always pick a SK over a ranger.

And one more thing, neither class (especially Ranger) will get as obscenely powerful in WR as they are on live. No class will, as WR is more aimed at an early years EQ experience and not the powergaming disaster LIVE is now.

From what I've noticed, there aren't too many major differences between WR classes and live. I'm pretty sure that SK's can still solo, tank, and pull well. I suggest you look into being an SK. They are a very good tank for groups and can solo (with patience and effort) during the slow times.

Duma's right, for the most part. My ranger does do around 80 melee DPS (depends on the mob, obviously), but mainly because I have good, high-end weaponry and equipment, and a load of AAs including ambidex, melee mastery, combat ferocity, combat fury, one of the best haste items out there and, generally, only achieve this level of DPS when I'm in an aggressive style positioned behind the mob.

My archery damage is currently around 10 points below my melee damage (but it's currently broken, in some form or fashion), but it still only reaches its peak (around 15 points above melee DPS) with, currently, one of the best bows on the server and archery AAs like Archery Mastery 3 and Endless Quiver (before these AAs, using the bow as a consistant source of DPS is usually not worth the hassle).

In regards to being a tank, a well-equipped ranger can tank for an exp group (I can tank Silent Lands with a competent cleric) and can generate a decent amount of hate, but will always lag behind pure tanks in the efficiency departement, having less hitpoints and less AC in general, and will therefore be picked after the warrior, shadowknight or paladin. The only real thing rangers can contribute to a group at the higher end of the game is their DPS, and a number of other classes can push out more than us (rogues, mages to a certain extent, and wizards). Monks are slightly below us on the DPS scale, and around the same level on the tanking scale, but can split pull. A number of other classes don't have the kind of DPS we have, but can provide functionality that's much more desired. Basically, if you want to be assured of a group, don't make a ranger.

As far as solo ability goes... I'd say rangers are way ahead of the shadowknights. Bowkiting, snares, roots, DoTs (and semi-slows), self damage shield and heals certainly make it easy, if a little boring. If you want to solo, I'd go ranger over SK.

If you want to play one of the two classes that are most needed at higher levels, then a warrior or a cleric is the way to go. If you pick a warrior, go out there and make a cleric friend, if you pick a cleric, go out and find a warrior friend. The warrior/cleric duos are probably the most efficient way to level up at the moment, not to mention that a warrior and cleric are the foundations of any good high-end exp group, and are both in high demand.

thanks for the replies =)

let me just start by saying that I played five classes on live, a 65 war, 65 rogue, 60 shaman, 60 wiz and 60 beastlord. I can't ever go back to playing a warrior again regardless of how popular they might be because I was bored silly with mine and wished that I never put all that time into the one I had.

I wanted to play new characters here, which I had never played before on live and the two that most appealed to me were ranger and SK because I love being a melee but would love to have some other utility as well, especially considering the lower server population.

the information i was really after was how much these classes have changed between here and live, are they stronger/weaker, better/worse, more exciting/less exciting.
I have been told that fear does not work here, as well as this, the SK aa which summons their minion (horse) is not working either and replaced by something awful instead. These two things are not enough to totally persuade me against picking SK but it is something I would consider and would definately affect my choice. (i.e. the lack of abilities and quality of AA's available).

right now im kind of leaning more towards ranger because of solo and group proficiencies, high damage output and aa's which strongly increase her abilities (am3/eq).

Just one final thing, is there somewhere that I can see what the ranger damage tables are here for melee and bow?

Thanks!

Hi, again.

Can anyone shed some light on bow damage tables here or at least damage tables for 50+ with 30dmg bows?

my archery skill is maxed but something just doesn't seem right.

Something else that is also bothering me, since level 1, I have never seen my ranger crit even once with his bow and im sure its not being filtered as I see other players critting. I've even tried filtering my own crits to another window just to see if they are happening and its never happened even once. This seems really bizarre because if I go onto a non-legit server and play a 60 ranger with even an ordinary bow, she crits almost every other hit and I can see it.

Good point, I don't think bows crit here. o_O

My lvl 32 ranger has never had a bow crit and skill has been maxed quite a long while now. However, it is strange because when grouped messages will show others bow crit. Please do your best to shed some light/fix it. Thx.

Rangers currently get criticals only with the Combat Fury AA. There have never been innate crits using a bow, but I think it's a good idea.

As for seeing other people crit, DarkArtist, it's probably a warrior, since they get the ability to crit with any attack at a very early level. :p

On Live, Rangers get crit with bow iinnately, Rogues get crit with throwing weapons innately and warriors get crit with all types innately.

If clerics have been given their crit heal innately on WR without having to work the aa for it, surely rangers should at least get their innate Crits with bows which they should have already...[/quote]

My point exactly. A warrior is innate for all crits, which seems accurate due to their nature. However, please explain the logic behind a ranger, whose entire "nature" would imply masterly proficient use of a bow more than any other class, being incapable of a bow crit until levels 50-60+? At which time he now has to focus his abilities/exp to perform a critical bow shot. It seems illogical that a warrior with a bow, at day one, could outperform a ranger with a bow. That is unless rangers were meant to be nerfed in the low game, so there would be more options/balance available in the high-end game. This will be quite strange once fletching is implemented, being that I could make bows/arrows but not be able to perform a critical hit with a bow that I crafted myself. If this is intentional, could you please give us a reason why, if it’s not too much trouble? Thx.

rangers were scary in outdoor zones on SZ... trueshot = dead alot of times... crits for massive damage :)

Funny though how trees were a rangers worst enemy when it came to outdoor pvping, gogo casting from behind a tree while immune to arrows.

Who's the treehugger now?
