Hi all

Dalayan Beginner
Hi everybody, i just found my way here from some odd site on the web... :) and i was just wondering what changes have been made from the live servers?
i understand that there are probably too many to list... but a quick run through would be nice:

any expansions not supported?
exp rate=?
drop rate=?
just to clarify, i have seen alot of servers with ridiculous exp and drop rates... and that's Not what i want...

have any changes been made to the classes? (major ones? - seen a few topics about minor changes and figure those are too many to list as well)

any other major changes i should be aware about?

how is the server stability? Uptime>downtime?

is the population good? if the forum population is any sort of estimate im guessing around 40k people...?

and is PVP enabled? if so, any major changes there? personally i like PVE the best, but my brother is also interested in this server, and he likes PVP

(P.S. Nobody better have taken my name!)

The most important thing to remember about the server is:

This is a custom server, not a private server.

Its a new game, running with the old engine. It has the feel of the game, but is not the game, to the point where zones connect differently, and near all items and quests are original.

Population is about 400+ at peak times, with a quoted 25%ish 'boxing' 2 characters at once at most times.

Its easier than the original game was to level, but don't expect it to be a quick thing your first time through.

I'm sure others will fill in and repeat what I've just said.

Check out these sites that both have a wealth of information that will answer many of your questions:

You will need through GoD to see all zones and models correctly.

It is not insanely fast, but you can grind to 65 pretty fast if you ignorelots of quests and content.

drop rate=?
We try to maintain a healthy and balanced economy. The drop rates are not insane, and we have new measures in place to help remove old items from the economy and reduce inflation.

Most of the classes still function in the role that you are used to from the original game. The best thing is to just jump and and try them out. Bards function a decent bit different here and if you are interested in that sort of thing I am sure a bard can point you to some information on it.

Server is very stable. Population is good. You can turn PVP on and off as you choose pretty much, but it is enabled.

Just to specifically adress PvP yes there is a system as such where people can flag themselves accordingly and there are restrictions as to what happens during pvp which are adressed in the ToK but in the major population there isn't a huge factor

that right there answered the bulk of my questions, but i just thought of a new one :)

i remember reading somewhere that someone will miss the bazaar? i take it the bazaar doesnt exist on SoD? if so how is the economy handled? will i be massivly spammed by WTS and WTB messages?

You can filter the /auc channel if you want but honestly if you want to get more economy issues than you need just read the BoE thread

Instead of the Bazaar we have the Listing System. Currently the economy is in a bit of upheaval after some changes that were put in to fix problems with over abundance of items due to the small community on a long running server. Thats the BoE (bind on equip) that Ryu mentioned. Once the changes are excepted by the masses the economy should smooth out.

seems awfully complex and long compared to the bazaar, but I'm betting that's just something I need to get used to... :) I understand that a workaround like this needs to be in place instead of the bazaar to keep this server Legal, right? or may I inquire as to the reason bazaar wasn't ploped in there? :p

anyhow, as long as the system works ill be happy :)

The searchable bazaar concept stagnates the economy and constantly devalues items. This approach still provdies you a way to find good deals from any player online or off, but you have to do a little work for it.

Here is the BoE threads he was referring to: http://forum.shardsofdalaya.com/index.php?topic=16018.0 & http://forum.shardsofdalaya.com/index.php?topic=13264.0

An economy cannot both stagnate and devalue; one precludes the other. Also, the bazaar is not the cause of devaluation, it's the excess of items that causes devaluation. The bad about the bazaar has less to do with its market impact than it does with abstracting the process of buying and selling, minimizing community involvement, and just being plain boring.

The good about the listing system is that involves work, which means some of the population isn't going to bother searching through it all the time and so there will still be an active auction market. Additionally, it removes some of the trouble of transporting and actively hawking goods, while adding an appropriate cost for that convenience. It also makes a lot more sense in a fantasy environment than the bazaar ever did.

As a new player myself, I have to admit I was very hesitant about the whole Listing system. And it is, in fact, immensely more difficult/time consuming than the bazaar system you remember, or the AH system in WoW if you've played that. But the reasoning behind it's existence (as Tempus just mentioned) is pretty solid. And while I'm often frustrated that I can't find what I'm looking for, I'm already getting better at using the system to my advantage. It just takes some practice, so don't let it intimidate you. If you have mad googling skills, they will help you somewhat with the listing system, as typing fast and being good at interpreting players' comments will help ya find what you're after. It'd be nice to not have to browse so much to spend more time exping/questing, but it certainly isn't a huge deal. Plus now when you find the perfect item for the perfect price, it's almost like getting the rare drop off the rare named spawn you've been camping ;)

This is not the place for this discussion, or semantical nit picking. I was giving this guy an over simplified reasoning since he is new to the game.

well i will be new soon enough.... my copy of Eq titanium should arrive soon... stupid slow a$$ postal service :p hopefully ill be able to enjoy this server soon :)

The listing system is intended to reduce a player's ability to screw with the economy and monopolize prices. I have some ideas on how to make it more convenient without adding searching however.

Cool, ideas are always welcome :) with the listing system, can i search for specific items, or do i have to search through sellers? (would be nice if i knew exaktly what item i wanted, just wanted to see if i could find a lower price, could also help give a guideline as to what items sell for when your adding yours)

When browsing listsold you can either view individual sellers or a listing of sellers. The seller listing allows sellers to add in a line of text describing their wares, so if you're looking for low level melee gear you can skip over all the ones that say SPELL BANK and MANA AUGMENTS or whatever, bu you can't search for individual items.

Hey, im the brother he previously mentioned might be interested too ;)
trying to get a hold of a game copy right now.. Problem is that amazon.com does not ship to Sweden and i refuse to pay the 30 dollars some other sites are charging.

On another note.. im just curious, how much power is needed to run the server.
Is it a monster quad core xeon machine with massive ammounts of ram and dedicated 1000Mbit line or..?
Always wondered how well their server software was written.

Hope i can find a copy of titanium soon :)
