Guilds, is it necessary to be in one?

Sanyia

Dalayan Adventurer
As soon as I solve my technical issues I will be playing WR.

Coming from 5 years of EQlive I was wondering if it becomes necessary to join a guild after lv 50 or so to remain a viable choice for a group. Does equipment play such an important role in WR as it does in live? Or WR guilds are more based on the socializing experience (as I suspect)?

I am hoping for a more relaxed and a less committing gaming experience. I have leveled four characters over 60 in my EQ days without boxing them. Now I much rather take it easy.

Xenyia 66 Rogue ...
Xanya 65 Necromancer ...
Xanyia 63 SK ...
Xennyia 63 Shaman..
Sanyia 57 Enchanter...all happily retired from the Terris-Thule EQlive server!

If you want to experience the top 25% of the content then yes guilds are a requirment, one of the big ones anyway. They don't raid everyday though.

There are loners, semi-cliques, and small guilds of 5-14 people that hang around, but you'll find the content runs out fast and you will rarely contribute anything to the server.

Btw, RUIN is recruiting Rogues and Enchanters who are interested in contributing (mostly to us ) :) .

Sounds a lot like EQlive, with less crowding.

I never really cared much about top content, I used to raid a lot about 4 years ago, but never progressed past Velious/NTOV/Luclin/Emperor Shhraaeza stuff.

I loved the sense of accomplishing something with a large group of people, but hated the long sessions, prepping time, and bikering about DKP afterwards. Did a few pickup POP raids for flags but then got bored with it, and mainly just one grouped/duoed/soloed my EQ sessions.

The guild for me was more a social thing, I even went to a Fan Fair with my BF once to meet my guildies. When EQ2 came out I followed some of them to it, made a mage for a change, but disliked the linearity of the game. It was nothing like Live, just prettier.

I can't wait to get WR to work! :)

Raiding here doesn't take hours and a hundred people like live. most raids main objectives are accomplished in 3-4 hours tops. Then whoever is left usually go on and do smaller targets.

These people are giving you the wrong idea! On WR, the server is set to have a much smaller difference between raiders and casuals! Sure, having higher stats and FT items, etc will help you! But listen, i have grouped with many people in the smaller guilds, or even ones without guilds, and they can still function fine. There are quests for decent armor/weapons that are soloable, and easily 1groupable monsters in many zones. Don't be discouraged, and enjoy the game.

Yay! That's just what I was hoping for!

With the later expansions on Live the gap between raider and non raider power became huge, you couldn't really make a group of non raiders for the new zones, because the tank would have bit the dust in two seconds flat.

Most pickup groups I have been in in OOW and GOD were raiders with a balanced group that needed a sixth to complete it, and as a rogue with 6500 hp buffed, 200+ AAXP weilding a 16/19 dagger with a 125 hp proc in primary I felt I was barely contributing anything to the fight.

It was hard earned equipment that I worked countless hours for, but I learned to dread each expansion release because my stuff was going the way of the dinosaurs way faster than I could replace it. I have better things in life to do than farm equipment, but I would still like to be useful to a group even if I maintain a casual play style.

We don't subscribe to SOE's method of making things obsolete with every expansion, and you can still contribute and play almost the entire game even without the best gear in the world.

First off...Hi ;-)

secondly...I think this is the place for me ;)

I have been searching for another server to play on for awhile now, I was dev on hackersquest old version of eqemu to some small extent a good while back; and put some wasted work into a few now dead servers. Anyway my main fear was putting more time into a server where it would just be a level grind to get to a point where i could enjoy the game.

What I really want to be able to do is explore and play the content in EQ that I havent been able to on Live. I was a beta player up through til velious but never found the huge raids and rediculous waste of time they required to be something I wanted to be involved in, so anything post kunark end game I simply havent played on Live.
Though I see you have your own custom world, I'm sure it will be just as exciting as the first time I played EQ.

I do have one question though: is the exp grind the same, with exception to the exp bonus in each zone as mentioned in your zone list? that would make the max exp 1.4x in kedge keep, right? so its still a level grind server, in a very (very) slightly lighter scale?
I think the fun thing of EQ is adventuring and exploring all the zones, conquering all of them, and not worrying about the grind. Leveling as a by-product of adventuring. Does your world support this or does it require a grind?
I'm somewhat mixed from what I've read so far.
The ideal world for EQ is one where players can play all the race/class combinations they ever wanted without shooting themselves in the foot because they dont spend enough time grinding their "main". I'm sure when all of you first started EQ, you couldnt decide what class you wanted to play, or what race, because you wanted to play ALL of them!
That initial feeling is what games like EQ - games that offer VARIETY and DIVERSITY - truly have in appeal. An appeal that SOE completely lost for a focus on an item based upgrade system.
Does WR have that appeal?
Or is it still a hinderance to your "main" to have 'alts', because it takes away time from the grind?

I'm tired and rambling, but I hope my point came across clearly.

Cheers for replies, and no intention of flaming (if by any chance this is taken as such:)

very nice site btw ;)
