graphics lag issues

I installed my EQ from the original discs and patched up to the ones specified in the install guide. I followed the setup instructions exactly, running the WR patcher, copying the various files to the appropriate directories, etc. When I first ran the game, I got the whole "can only support 2 models" thing, clicked next, then read the posts and went back and re-did the graphics card select and models and pressed enter rather than clicking next. Was able to log in, create a character and start in the game.

However, the problem is this... even before I clicked to add the luclin models, I was getting severe lag issues on the graphics side, even with all of the options set to their lowest settings. (640x480, 0 clip plane, simple sky, etc etc.) I am talking the kind of jerkiness that I saw in the Bazaar when playing EQ live. I was able to play EQ Live without these issues using the same graphics card, and only had the lag in the more graphically intense Luclin or very crowded zones.

Is this problem part of playing on an EQEmu server, or am I having some kind of issue with the WR client?

Suggestions?

You didn't post your computer specs, but I can say that's definitely on the client side. I'd suggest the obvious/typical check drivers and update.

AMD Athlon XP 1600
768 MB Ram
Windows XP Pro SP2

Video Card:
NVidia GeForce 4 MX420 (not the best, I know)
64MB Video Ram (not shared)
Driver Ver. 7.1.8.9 (Latest, downloaded from nvidia)
Directx Ver 9.0c

The whole system just went through a wipe and load, new OS, new drivers, clean install of EQ. I went through all of the video card settings and couldnt see anything that would cause a slow down, like I said, this same machine ran EQ fine on live. That was quite a while ago, however. Perhaps Live updated something that caused a greater load on the graphics card.

Almost the same specs as my previous box. I played with minimal (no spell effects, old models, very little clip plane) effects just because I never ever wanted any lag.
