Getting the Researcher's Aug

Hey guys. I'm wondering if maybe my faction might be bugged or something. I've done every single CoI quest except Mercy, Engage the Zaranth, and Brother Mine, and I still can't get the last augment.

Here's my /cm journal active:
1: Gods and Mortals
14: Brother Mine
17: Dealing with the Snobolds ( turned in 60 ears, quest is bugged to stay in the active section )
19: Engage the Zaranth ( drop rate on those tarot cards is terrible, much less trying to get 4 distinct cards )
( Didn't start Mercy )

Here's my /cm journal complete
2: Mysterious Summons
3: Graverobbing
4: Deepocean Exploration
5: Gnoll Wisdom
6: Until Death Us Do Part
7: Spirit Call
8: Bits and Pieces
9: Spirit Ore
10: A Bug On The Wall
11: Study the Locals
12: To Play in the Forest ( yeah, i did this one right )
13: Harthuk Herding
15: Mass Graverobbing
16: Study the Zaranth
18: Stalking the Widow
20: Home is Where the Heart Is ( this one was HARD, had a VD map raid there so we did it while we were in Shadowdale and it was still tough )

Seriously, do I have to do every single quest? As hard as "Home is where the heart is" was I would think I could skip a few quests in thurg. I also thought "To play in the forest" was supposed to provide a good amount of faction since you can only attempt it once. If it's really supposed to be like this? I did the council quests back when they were first implemented and my BST didn't have to do nearly this many to get the aug. If anyone can provide some insight on this I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks

Olue/Olae

(Speaking as a player and CoI researcher here, I don't have staff info on these quests)

The rule of thumb I've heard is that you do all except:

(1) Mercy

(2) Brother Mine, Engaging the Zaranth, or Home Is Where The Heart Is

(3) To Play in the Forest [this one doesn't matter either way]

I'd say you're one quest from done.

Hmmm. How hard would you say Mercy is compared to Home Is Where The Heart Is? What about Brother Mine?

I might try to throw down sorcs lab again because those tarot cards just don't drop enough : (

Thanks for all your help dude.

Seriously, do I have to do every single quest?

Not having done 3 of the quests, isn't it a bit early to get all upset about "every single quest"?

Brother mine is probably the easiest of the things you have outstanding. I'd try that first.

Oh, and if you thought Home is where the hard is was hard, you should try Mercy. ;)

I have done the quest on 3 toons and seriously doubt you can get last augment without doing Brother Mine and Engage the Zarath. They have big factions hits.

To Play in the Forest gives a solid amount of faction XP and will allow a player to skip two of the quests listed under (2). If you did the maximum number of turn ins on all of the quests you have completed you would be done by now. I think you probably took the option to complete one or more of the quests early. Performing the maximum turn-ins before taking any new dialog options actually makes a difference.

Oh, and if you thought Home is where the hard is was hard, you should try Mercy. ;)

I've attempted each of the quests I mentioned on my beastlord (except Mercy, which is why I asked about how difficult it was) when the quests came out back in the day, but I didn't have to do a lot of this stuff back then so my main concern was whether or not my faction was bugged. Based on Tarutao's information I'm guessing that the requirements for the final aug have just been upped. So that's where I'm coming from with this thread, my previous experience with the council contradicted the experience I'm getting now. I'm not just butthurt over more questing.

Thanks for the advice on which of the quests to try first, though!

I have completed all of the quests I listed 100%. 60 harthuk sorcerer's tomes, 60 ears, 12 scraps/large scraps, etc.

So is this something I could fix or should I just try to do one of the other quests?

Bits and Pieces and Study the Locals are the specific quests I was referring to. These two quests are easy to complete because the turn-in NPCs start telling you about additional steps once you've done about 75% of the available turn-ins. If you pursue the new dialog options these quests will become complete and you will not be able to get the faction xp that you missed. They are in your completed journal so there is nothing for you to do now, but move on to the tougher quests.

Oh, and just for reference, I just finished this on a toon without doing:

Study the Zaranth
Engage the Zaranth
To Play in the Forest (Failed)

and only turning in about half of the ears for Dealing with the Snobolds.

I DID do the max turn-ins for each quest along the way though.

I was sure to do all of these too. 5 turn-ins of each set for Bits and Pieces, and 10 of every monster (I counted and waited for the message that says I can't get any more information). I'm 100% sure I completed every quest 100% along the way. I even kept a list of the quests and kept track of my progression in them as I went along.

I did Study the Zaranth, To Play in the Forest successfully, and the max amount of turnings for Dealing with the Snobolds too. Study the Zaranth wasn't that bad, but after all of the killing I did there to find the locations (my memory was fuzzy from last time), I only had one tarot card to show for it.

Would any dev with knowledge of this quest line be able to maybe take a look at my stuff to make sure? I'd hate to spend 2-3 weeks of my life farming tarot cards (if I'm unable to handle Brother Mine) and then it turns out to be a bug with my faction.

Thanks a lot for your help guys.

I'd recommend just taking a group and doing Brother Mine. It'll only take you a couple hours, and will be good XP along the way. It's not that hard if you're careful.

These are the quests I did to complete mine.

Deepocean Exploration
Gnoll Wisdom
Until Death us Do Part
Spirit Call
Graverobbing
Spirit Ore
Bits and Pieces
Study the Locals
Harthuk Herding
Stalking the Widow
Mass Graverobbing
Dealing With the Snobolds
Study the Zaranth
Engage the Zaranth
A Bug on the Wall
Brother Mine

Yeah, the hard part is convincing a group of people to help me on a quest. The only reason I had a raid to help me with A Bug on the Wall and Home is Where The Heart Is is because we had a VD map in the same zone : /

I'll take your advice, but if any dev wants to take a look for the fun of it i won't object.

Thanks a lot guys

Refresh my memory here... Brother Mine is the one about getting theRecords of Construction and then beating up the gargolyl in Sorcerers lab correct?

If so its definitely not bad, 1 groupable by lower geared toons, and Boxable by higher tier toons. (heck might even be soloable by really high tier toons been awhile sinc e i did this one).

Mercy and that last Escort one are definitely optional. I have done CoI quest on 3 differrnt characters and always skiped Mercy and the last Escort. (save for going back with my Paladin to get that last +Good Alighnment shift I needed).

Yeah it turned out to be pretty easy. A guild member was mowing down the castle area so I joined to pick up the records. We ended up getting a tank to help us out with the prototype. My BST got some aggro at the end and it didn't even hit for that much. I probably could have duo'd it myself with some difficulty :tinfoil:

Also the quest was enough to get me the final aug, so that was the issue. Thanks a lot for the help guys.

Most people complete without the second Zaranth Quest and To Play in the Forest

The Difficulty of Brother Mine is vastly overstated and can be tanked by any DM equipped tank the only issue is to remember that it mana drains and position your casters accordingly.

Everyone knows I suck but I have done this quest 3 times with 2 people boxing 4 toons without even breathing hard

I did these to complete

Deepocean Exploration
Gnoll Wisdom
Until Death Us Do Part
Spirit Call
Mercy
Graverobbing
Mass Graverobbing
Study the Locals
Spirit Ore
Bits and Pieces
A Bug on the Wall
Harthuk Herding
Brother Mine
Engage the Zaranth
Study the Zaranth
Dealing With the Snobolds
Stalking the Widow

Tried To Play in the Forest but failed
Skipped Home Is Where The Heart Is cause I duod whole quest with Mag/Clr and Brother Mine was easy to duo.
Tarot cards are sometimes rare drops, I spend about 4 hours there and got all 4. Some ppl says they spend week there and don't get any. I guess that's more luck you need there.
