gems from mining?

first off, looked for all of 5 minutes for a previous post on this so if it's already been considered and thrown out, please say so. But I thought it might be kinda neat if maybe once in a very rare blue moon, while mining you might be able to snag a rare gem?
 
Was mentioned in the mining revamp thread but I dont think anything came about it. Yes, this would be awesome.

I didn't really see a similarity between our suggestions here. He's hoping to adjust the price cost of gems for early jewelers. I'm hoping to be able to mine gems (very rarely).
