It seems to be the same phenomenon as zone crashing. I have theories as to why this might be occurring, but no real method of testing things out yet that I have figured out.

What I CAN tell you, however, is that things like this do not appear to be governed by so-called "lag" (which is a terrible term and utterly useless from a diagnostic perspective). I ran some testing a few weeks ago where I intentionally introduced large amounts of latency and packet loss into my data stream. The results were that zoning took a very long time (up to 2 minutes in some cases), but not once did I "freeze" or get kicked back to server select. Whatever is occurring is not as simple as a bad connection or something.

I'm hoping eventually more research shows the way, but I haven't had a ton of time to invest in it other than to rule out what I believe the most common problem might be. Now it could be a combination of these sorts of factors, but as of yet, I have not seen what that combination might be.

Got the same prob, know since when it occurs

Hi, I've got the same problem, client freezing, to the extend that I have to kill the client with the task manager. I get the freeze every single time I die with one of my toons.

Interestingly this problem occured the first time after the patch with which these tell windows were activated, some weeks ago (it was also the patch after which these help windows popped up), and occured every time since then. Before this patch I had the occasional freeze I think, but I definitely had no freeze with the majority of deaths.

What happens is, toon dies, DF icon is shown, and the client freezes. Also freezes mouse, sometimes even keyboard.
System: Windows 7 Professional on a quad core laptop. Playing without bind to processor, because bind to processor worsens normal gameplay.

If any admin/dev got an idea what I can do to gather some data and track the problem, I'm willing to do some dying to help find the cause.

If you end up getting dumped or have to kill the client, PLEASE go look in dbg.txt for anything that might be relevant. When it hangs, I kind of doubt anything will be there, but it's worth a shot.

Ok, did some testing:
death, bind point in same zone: I get the message "You have died..., Returning to home point... ". The game client displayes the situation at the death (dead char lying on the floor), Death fatigue debuff is shown in the effects window. The character is *not*`shown in /w all athica (died in athica, bind point was athica)

the messages below are written to dbg.txt. Game is frozen afterwards, its not possible to activate the game window, or move it with the mouse, or anything. Mouse is not locked (happens some times with this problem).
Interestingly if I start SoD while the one client is frozen, I get the point where the "General Rules"´Window is shown where you need to press "I Accept" or "Decline", but its not possible to move the mouse in this window, but I can press keys in this window and even log in, basically do anything without a mouse.
The frozen client still uses cpu time, and the same amount as an active client window uses. Also the frozen client still has some "input/output other", 50-100 bytes/s, shown in the task manager, but not disk access (neither read nor write).

Any other idea I can do to give you further information?

dying with game client minimized - more or less same behavior

Ok, some more infos:

I tried dying, this time with the game window minimized (setup: had two clients open, one was minimized before the test toon died).

This time the game client still freezes, still cannot be activated afterwards and needs to be killed, but the mouse does not freeze, its still usable in the other client window. The character which died still does not show in /w all athica about 15s after death. (he's shown in the first 15s after death, then with zone "(null)" at about 15s after death, then no more)

Any other ideas what I can do to test this?
 
did some more testing: dying when game client is in fullscreen mode: same behavior, this time the death fatigue icon did not show (but tried it only once, might or might no have any significance), rest is more or less the same, with the additional effect that the frozen game client also effects the Window Manager
 
prob also occurs with a cm refresh!

Were you zoning to Athica after you died, and that's where you hung? If so, this indeed might be helpful, though it will require some research as to what is happening in the client after ProcessGame.
 
Hi, I was bound directly in the zone where I died (Athica) and where I did the /cm refresh, but might still be connected to zoning.

Did some more testing: The way the logs look like when a death occurs a "zoning" is done even if the bind point is in the same zone (The same messages occur)

When I'm zoning normally, the log looks like follows:

When I'm dying, the log stops at "ProcessGame. After EnterZone." (last message). The log part before "After EnterZone" looks the same for the normal zoning case and the dying case.

Funny thing is, when I do a /cm refresh, the log shows a message "I died" so it seems like /cm refresh uses the same code as dying, without death fatigue, so it would be no wonder that the same problem occurs.

So my conclusion is that the freeze seems to occur between
"ProcessGame. After EnterZone" and
"ProcessGame. Beginning main loop", although that does no necessarily mean that the problem is triggered there

The freeze is connected to death events (since /cm refresh apparently uses the same code) but usually does not occur on zoning. I think it is significant that it happens every single death, since the day it first occured I died often and had a freeze without a single exception.
The freeze did *not* occur with any regularity before the patch ( the patch where among others the separate tell windows were activated), this surely is also significant, because the problem must be connected to some change done with that patch.

The same freeze might occur on zoning, I remember that I do get a freeze very rarely on zoning => need further testing and checking of the log files to see wether these problems are connected or not

Interesting is the fact that CPU usage of the frozen prozess stays up, around the same level as the client usually has.


Is there any possibility to trigger some process dump of the client process from outside?

Further hypothese and options to test:
- Zoning while unconscious: this would be to check wether the state of unconsciousness triggers the bug (Could possibly be done by a GM: Hit my test toon until its unconscious, then trigger a Gate to Bindpoint or something like that)
- Could it be that the bug is connected to the camera angle? (Just a wild guess)
- Zone while stunned/mezzed (when stunned, the mouse is frozen also I think, just another wild guess)

Hope this might help track the problem

The following things don't cause the problem:
zoning with death fatigue (I zoned a lot with DF on after I died)

just hit the right idea: The problem is caused by the help-windows which pop up. Proof: When I disable these help windows completely, dying does *NOT* cause a freeze. When I reactivate them, dying freezes the client again. Tried several times, both with and without help windows.


So the solution of the problem is, to disable these help windows completely.

From what you are posting, not doing any of my own research, and not being a dev... ;) It sounds like a classic case of someone needs to review the code for:

There is a trigger in here that is not hitting every time, or it can't read a client/char state to know to proceed

If nothing is found above, it is that the following doesn't know to trigger:

I'm having this problem too :( I tried disabling the help messages and it worked for one death, but the next time I died the client froze again.
 
@firewarks: do you have this zoning problem also? In this case your freeze might be due to the zoning problem (a death also reconnects to zone so might trigger the zoning problem). At least for me the problem seems to be gone for good, died three times today and didn't have any freeze.

@Goldfolk: As I added in the other thread: This is a solution for the death freeze problem, *not* for zoning problems. I have no zoning problems on my client so cannot investigate on that one.

That isn't possible. Changing the client would involve access to the source for it which is not public and we don't have.
